This album sold like crazy for Roderick! It was deemed a "comeback" at the time, but Rod hadn't gone anywhere, and he hadn't stopped selling records either, so go figure....
Out of Order rocked harder than anything we'd heard from Rod in years, and certainly rocked MUCH harder than anything he's done since. It was a return to Rod the Rocker that many of his longtime fans had longed for. Teamed with Andy Taylor of Duran Duran, you wouldn't have expected this, unless you happened to listen to Andy Taylor's solo work. What Out of Order became was a strong mix of solid rock with Rod's balladeering and storytelling.
"Lost in You" was a lead single that immediately received heavy airplay. A little bit of "the Scot" thrown into a nice 80's rock sound. Second up was "The Wild Horse". An excellent tune, which was a bit of a throwback. A strong guitar, very Faces-like tune from Taylor, played at mid-tempo. Suits Rod's voice perfectly.
You had mega-hits "Forever Young", "Crazy About Her", & "My Heart Can't Tell Me No", all with ultra-cool Rod videos, which got constant airplay on your local video channel.
Lesser known rockers from the album are "Dynamite", which is classic Rod- Fast, partying, drinking, & chicks, all to a driving beat. "Lethal Dose of Love" was a nod to Rod's early 80's work. Sounds as if it could have been written for 1983's Camouflage album. Strong beat, fun lyrics. The cd contains a song not found on the original vinyl, "Almost Illegal" which is another fine rocker in the traditional Rod style.
Of course, it wouldn't be Rod without a not to his soul/Motown loving past, and you have a cover of "Try a Little Tenderness", and the lovely, "When I Was Your Man".
Sadly, Rod has never rocked this way since. His Out of Order tour saw his a man possessed on stage, mixing hits from this platter with his old classics. While I have no qualms about Rod's "softening" since then- we all get older- I hold Out of Order as a jewel in his output from the last 20 years. He showed flashes of it on When We Were The New Boys, released in 1998, but it was short lived.
A very good album any Rod fan should be happy with.

(More customer reviews)I saw this tour. I bought this album when it was first released and have never stopped listening to it over the years. However, I must say that omitting GUESS, I'LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU is a sin. Warner Brothers needs to get off thier duff and remaster and release this album with the 2 songs they chopped in order to fit this onto one CD. What amazes me even more is with all the box sets, and best ofs, these two songs still remain unavailable. This isn't some small time artist that only put out a few albums in the seventies. This is Rod the mod, himself. Legend, rock and roll master. Please reissue this as Nazareth did with their live album, Snaz.

Vagabond Heart Review

(More customer reviews)After seeing Rod Stewart live in concert recently, I went in search of "It Takes Two" which had brought the house down at his show. Although I own many of his CD's, this cut was not on any of the ones I had. Although I bought it strictly for this Rod/Tina Turner duet, I found many more "lesser known" songs I thoroughly enjoy on this one. "Rebel Heart" is classic Rocking Rod for those of us who first fell in love with him in the 1970's. The soulful "When A Man's In Love" is also alone worth the cost of the CD. Equally enjoyable are the classic "Rhythm of My Heart" and his delightful homage to Motown with "The Motown Song." I've been playing this one over and over and pondering why it never achieved the success of his other albums.
Originally released in 1991, it was his 18th album and is dedicated to his father who had recently passed away. It was his father that had the foresight to give him a guitar on this 14th birthday instead of the model railway equipment Rod requested. Rock music owes a deep debt of gratitude to Mr. Robert Joseph Stewart for such an inspirational gift.

Soulbook Review

Rod Stewart's latest CD, "Soulbook," has him singing fairly well but it's not exactly the best album he has ever released. For Rod's fans when he was doing a much, much different style of music, this may not be for them unless they also like this genre of music, too. Rod's voice may not be quite as strong as it was twenty or more years ago; but that's the aging process. I will say that Rod still delivers his songs from the heart and that's admirable. The track set lets the songs flow rather well into each other and that enhances the album but then again there are a few missteps along the way. Some numbers are stronger than others for sure!
"It's The Same Old Song" is very well done; and this starts the album off in a good direction. The drums and percussion add a lot to the arrangement. The music fits in very well with Rod's vocals and he never misses a beat, either! "My Cherie Amour" features Stevie Wonder singing with Rod; I like it but this is truly Stevie's song. Moreover, at this stage in his life Rod's voice just can't measure up to the Stevie's original performance back in the day. Sorry, Rod! On the other hand, however, "You Make Me Feel Brand New" charms me with its beauty; Mary J. Blige does a great job with Rod and that's grand. They should do more duets together! I also really like "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher;" the arrangement works wonders for this classic tune.
"Let It Be Me" is a stunner that has Rod Stewart singing wonderfully with Jennifer Hudson. Hudson was the perfect choice for this duet--heck, she could sing out the phonebook and I'd be standing there applauding! Rod's vocals are also easy on the ear. In addition, "Rainy Night in Georgia" is a big highlight of this album. "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" is another song that gets a fine treatment; Rod sings this and the backup singers harmonize to perfection.
Whether or not you'll like the other tracks depends on your personal preferences. To my mind, other songs that make the grade include "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" and "If You Don't Know Me by Now." The arrangements for the other tracks are good but they could have been better and Rod's voice just isn't quite solid enough to rank as high in my book as it used to rank although I do get the clear impression that Rod sings with all his heart and soul and I admire that.
Overall, "Soulbook" is an album for people who like classic soul music and covers of those tunes; and Rod Stewart diehard fans may want to get this because they would probably like to have everything Rod ever did or will do. The more casual fan, however, would do well to keep looking for other soul albums; this is a pretty good album but it's just not completely distinguished.

Stewart is personally passionate about this project, which is a return to his beginnings when he fronted The Jeff Beck Band and the critically-revered band The Faces, iconic in the history books for fusing American roots music - Rock, Soul and Blues. Soulbook reunites Stewart with his longtime collaborators, producers Steve Tyrell and Steve Jordan, of Rolling Stones/Xpensive Winos fame, who also brought in top musicians Ray Parker Jr., Waddy Watchel, Darrell Jones, Dean Parks and David Paich to join Rod in the studio for the album.

One Night Only - Rod Stewart Live at Royal Albert Hall Review

(More customer reviews)Others have described the details of the show so I won't bore you except to say that if you're a Rod fan, especially one like me who's loved his work for (groan) over 35 years, I'll just say that... THIS ONE'S GONNA FLOOR YA. Just a fabulous performance (and for once, consistently great camerawork and great editing.) But I do want to tell you about one song, one very special moment. As we know, late one night a thousand years ago Long John Baldry discovered Rod as he was singing in a lonely train station, and took him under his wing. Rod's returned the favour big time. Imagine if you will being a very young woman busking on the streets of Glasgow... and one week later descending a beautifully lit grand staircase to the stage of the Royal Albert Hall to sing "I Don't Wanna Talk About It" on live national TV with Rod Stewart. God, how this girl keeps it together is beyond me, but she does, she in fact KILLS. It's an exquisitely beautiful, deeply moving, very human moment. A great moment of artistic generosity on Rod's part, and a lump-in-the-throat moment for the viewer as Amy Belle experiences what must have been the peak moment of her life. It's unforgettable, and there wasn't a dry eye in this house I can promise you. Oh, and any Rod fan who's hesitant about this American Songbook stuff, not to worry, his performance of these old chestnuts is fabulous, as though they'd been written for him or by him. And the final number, "Sailing," is a knockout. I think this DVD simply backs up what I've always maintained, which is that Rod is the greatest solo act of our generation. Rod, if you're reading this, a million thanks for all the pleasure over five decades, all the unforgettable shows, from a little kid from the Boston Tea Party...

The video brings back great memories of the excellant concert by Rod and the date that I took to the show. The video has all of his hits including Maggie Mae. If you are a fan of Rod Stewarts, you'l like this video.
