(More customer reviews)If the departure of Peter Gabriel was a real blow for the band back in 1975 then the departure of Phil Collins should spell their imminent demise. Commercially Genesis will almost certainly never recover but musically they have gone and produced arguably their best and most consistent album since 'Duke'.
It is fairly certain that messers Banks and Rutherford are in a financial position not to have to worry about sales and so instead they concentrate on the traditional strengths of Genesis: high quality prog rock. This will not please fans of 'Invisible Touch' or the dull 'We Can't Dance' but long term fans will find plenty to enjoy. 'Congo' is an terrific single and deserved greater radio play while 'One Man's fool' is one of the best things the band have ever done. 'The Dividing Line' and 'There Must Be Some Other Way' also have a power and ambience that was completely lacking in recent albums.
The multi-talented Collins requires two replacements and both handle things admirably. Ray Wilson has a pleasing, soulful voice and the unpronouncable Nir Zidkyahu is a fine drummer and sometimes sounds uncannily like Collins, particularly on 'One Man's Fool'.
There are possibly one or two tracks too many on the album - something that could be said for many Genesis albums from the seventies onwards - and those who were fans of Genesis purely for Phil Collins should steer clear. Everyone else can purchase without hesitation.

Live In Poland (1998) Review

(More customer reviews)I was thrilled to see that the Genesis 1998 Calling All Stations Tour was finally getting officially released on DVD (NTSC, Region 0). For those who do not know, it was the (often forgotten) tour after Phil Collins officially announced his departure from Genesis. The band line up included co-founding members Mike Rutherford (guitars/bass) and Tony Banks (keys) with new lead singer Ray Wilson and backing musicians Nir Z (drums) and Anthony Drennon (guitars/bass).
All of that being said, I was extremely disappointed to find out upon playing the DVD that it is the same quality as the bootleg in wide circulation (from Polish television) and the claimed '5.1 surround sound', is completely bogus. It's actually audio that is equally disbursed through four stereo channels. So, the quality is only so-so, and the audio is only so-so overall. The only positive is that the discs and packaging are attractive. I later came to learn that this DVD is not sanctioned by the band or their management, which explains why the item is sub-par in comparison to the band's other DVD releases.
While its nice to have this largely undocumented tour on a pressed DVD set (only excerpts appear on the video portion of the official 1983-1998 Box Set 5CD/5DVD), it will leave some people feeling disappointed.

(More customer reviews)I liked this album when it was originally released. It was dark and moody but sounded fresh and Ray Wilson has a great voice to fit the band. I was pumped to see all the remasters for Genesis but upon a closer look the band really disses this re-release. There were so many extra songs recorded that were used as b-sides to the singles released (i.e Congo, Shipwrecked, etc.) why not include them on this release as a 2nd cd? Also the live footage is great but c'mon! only 3 songs!!, the band had a complete show filmed in Poland waiting to be released if the album was a huge success, but as you can guess it wasn't. Oh well, I really felt the band purposely overlooked this album when it came time to remaster...they could have included all the Wilson era songs plus the concert into a nice comprehensive package that the diehard Genesis fans have wanted of this album.
