Last summer, I took my little sister to see the Jonas Brothers on their Burning Up tour for her 8th grade graduation. As a 23-year-old, I thought I would have a good enough time for what it was--a teeny bopper group whose popularity would fade in a few months. Boy, was I wrong. Their musicality is refreshing, their lyrics well written, and they're even better live than on their CD. This said, this album really takes me back to the night of the concert-the excitement captured from both the Jonas Brothers and the crowd is great and really adds to the overall CD.
The new song is also beautiful; I feel it has a bit of a different sound/vibe than their previous stuff. The line "Leaders, show us how to love each other/It could help us to recover/Love is on its way" makes it especially thought provoking for the distressful times our country is finding itself in right now.
Overall, if you're a fan of the Jonas Brothers, you'll love this CD.

The Jonas Brothers are the hottest boy band in America.
With a large legion of fans, the group which consists of brothers Kevin, Joe and Nick, the Jonas Brothers have accomplished many things in their last three years since the release of their first album.
The group debuted on Columbia Records INO Records (a Christian Label) in 2006 and eventually received airplay on Nickelodeon's "Zoey 101: Spring Break-Up" and various Disney soundtrack and compilations. Despite the group starting to gain momentum, the group was dropped by Columbia Records and had no label until signing with Hollywood Records in 2007. And received more attention when they appeared on an episode of "Hannah Montana" and the group were playing at major televised events.
But it was until the group released their third album "A Little Bit Longer" in 2008 which gained mainstream attention (and #40 on Rolling Stone Magazine's top 50 albums in the US) and the group had their own Disney film "Camp Rock" which featured the trio with another upcoming Disney Channel starlet Demi Lovato. The group also received the spotlight on the front cover of Rolling Stone Magazine.
Needless to say, the Jonas Brothers have become popular and Disney began filming their concert tour in the Summer of 2008, preparing the film for a 3D release and starring both popular actress/pop star Demi Lovato and popular country singer Taylor Swift.
"JONAS BROTHERS - THE 3D CONCERT EXPERIENCE" came out in theaters on February 2009.
The film was directed by Bruce Hendricks (producer of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films and "Pearl Harbor") and cinematography by Mitchell Amundsen ("G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra", "Wanted", "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour", "Transformers"and "Transporter 2') and Reed Smoot "Circque du Soleil: Journey of Man", "Mystery of the Nile" and "Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs").
Needless to say, when it comes to idol-based music films or concerts, they are literally targeted towards their fandom and demographic. Those not familiar with the Jonas Brothers or care for their music are probably not going to have much of an interest in the film. But for those who do enjoy the group's music, "JONAS BROTHERS - THE 3D CONCERT EXPERIENCE: DELUXE EXTENDED MOVIE" is actually an enjoyable release. First off, you get four 3D glasses and you can enjoy the film in either its 3D or 2D presentation via Blu-ray. You get the DVD and a digital copy for a total of 3-Discs.
The following songs are featured in "JONAS BROTHERS - THE 3D CONCERT EXPERIENCE":
1. "Tonight" (Intro/Opening Credits)
2. "That's Just the Way We Roll"
3. "Hold On"
4. "BB Good"
5. "Goodnight and Goodbye"
6. "Video Girl"
7. "Gotta Find You"
8. "This Is Me" (Demi Lovato & Jonas Brothers)
9. "Hello Beautiful"
10. "Still In Love With You"
11. "Pushin' Me Away"
12. "Should've Said No" (Taylor Swift & Jonas Brothers)
13. "Love Is on Its Way"
14. "S.O.S."
15. "Burnin' Up"
Additional performances featured on the DVD Extended Version
16. "Can't Have You"
17. "A Little Bit Longer"
For the film, you get a good balance of concert and also other activities such as the guys picking up the release of their third album, the fake Jonas Brothers and a lot of footage of their hardcore fans. Also, the group performing with their band outdoors and backstage footage.
In terms of concert footage, having reviewed many concert releases on DVD, you often wonder how a concert looks like when it has a significant budget, this is a good example. There are cameras everywhere. Multiple angles, closeups, front, sideways, behind the band, above the band in a various angles you name it, there's a camera. Editor Michael Tronick (Editor for "Hudson Hawk","Bedtime Stories", "Days of Thunder", "S.W.A.T.", "Mr. and Mrs. Smith) did an absolutely great job with the cut footage. No dizzying quick cuts, gives the viewer time to adjust and enjoy the ambiance of the crowded concert with its many fans and their light sticks. The group and band with their constant movement throughout the stage. It's well done!
The lighting is well done and very good lighting from purple, pinks, greens, blues, ambers. And again, the larger production budget definitely shows with the stage set-up.
As for the 3D portion, I'm not the biggest fan of 3D because seldom does it work effectively (with the exception of the 3D shows I have seen at Disneyland) but for "JONAS BROTHERS - THE 3D CONCERT EXPERIENCE", for the most part, the 3D works. From Nick Jonas throwing a drum stick to the drummer and Taylor Swift flicking her guitar pick towards the camera. Those instances were enjoyable.
For the most part, 3D is used to show the audiences arms and light sticks and moreso, bringing out the performers and giving a visual depth when Joe Jonas is seen at the front and everyone is seen directly behind. Also, 3D is used quite a bit during the scenes with cast and crew credits. Also, seeing flames from the stage, the mic and mic stand right by you.
Where it's not effective is certain shots where you can see lines on the faces (for example, during the Jonas Brothers performance with Demi Lovato) during the 3D portion. And this happens a few times during the film. But for the most part, the 3D does work and some scenes that were quite effective. I had a few people with varying eyesight test out the 3D glasses during the play of the concert and interesting enough, each person had different experiences with the one with better eyesight feeling that everything was much more alive and coming out to them visually.
Of course, for those who don't care for 3D can select 2D on the Blu-ray disc and also, the 2D version is included on the optional DVD and digital copy.
VIDEO & AUDIO:
"JONAS BROTHERS - THE 3D CONCERT EXPERIENCE: DELUXE EXTENDED MOVIE" is featured in 1080p High Definition (1:85:1). Of course, quality is a non-issue during the 3D portion but for the 2D portion included, the film is quite vibrant in colors. As mentioned above, there is a lot of lighting in this concert and colors really come out quite well in this film. If there is one thing that I'm always confident from a release from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, every Blu-ray release has had solid picture quality and this film is no exception.
Colors come out quite well during the concert, audience faces can be seen from a distance, blacks are nice and deep. No low-light noise, overall for a concert related release, this is probably one of the best looking concerts I have seen on Blu-ray but considering not many concerts are shot with this large of a budget and is shown as a feature film.
And the audio is fantastic. Disney went for the 7.1 English DTS-HD Master Audio. So you have the front channels delivering the music and vocals. The rear surrounds delivering the audience. Great use of LFE as my subwoofer was being used during the concert. It's an immersive soundtrack and if I had to really nitpick, I wish the explosions had a little more kick but overall, the concert presentation given the DTS-HD Master Audio track was quite exceptional.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
"JONAS BROTHERS - THE 3D CONCERT EXPERIENCE: DELUXE EXTENDED MOVIE" comes with a few special features. Included are:
* BONUS SONGS of "LOVE BUG" and "SHELF" - Both the Blu-ray and DVD feature two performances not included in the extended version of the film. "LOVE BUG" (3:41) features the group rehearsing and practicing with their band and goofing around. And then shots of the group performing live in concert with the band. "SHELF" (4:25) features the group performing live.
* BACKSTAGE DISNEY: Up Close & Personal with the Jonas Brothers - (15:09) An in-depth look at the Jonas Brothers as they recall the challenges they had in their career and remembering how they performed at small venues two years ago and now they are performing at larger venues. How they planned the stage along with their crew and working together with everyone (musicians and crew) and treating them like a family. Working with Rob Brenner (Tour Director) and a behind-the-scenes look at rehearsals and challenges they had to face. Promotional tours and being thankful to their fans. An enjoyable featurette.
* Dylan & Cole Sprouse: Blu-ray is Suite (DVD Only) - (5:57) A promotional by the "Suite Life with Zack and Cody" stars promoting Blu-ray.
JUDGMENT CALL:
I've reviewed many concerts on DVD and beginning to review more on Blu-ray but I have to say that this release is quite solid. The Jonas Brothers and their music may not be for everyone but for fans, this is a solid release. It's well-produced, well-edited and again, not may concerts get the higher production (nor do they get a feature film and featured in 3D). You get one of the best looking concerts on Blu-ray with a pretty awesome soundtrack.
For fans of the Jonas Brothers, you really can't go wrong with "JONAS BROTHERS - THE 3D CONCERT EXPERIENCE: DELUXE EXTENDED MOVIE". Disney went all out in giving fans the 2D and 3D version on Blu-ray, plus the Extended Movie on DVD and the DisneyFile Digital Copy.
Personally, I thought it was a well-done concert. Watching a male pop band doing acrobatics during their performance might not be for everyone but having reviewed many female and male idol concerts from Japan and other parts of world, this is pretty standard, so I was not put off by it at all.
Also, I am aware of the negative reviews from...Read more›

Suddenly Review

Overall, "Suddenly" is probably the best debut album a band could ask for. Featuring upbeat rhythm and high energy intrumentation/vocals, Suddenly showcases the band's fun-loving spirit. Overall album rating = A+
----------------------
HEY, PRINCESS - One of the more popular songs on the album. Features punk influences, a subtle use of paired vocal harmony, mild rhythmic syncopation, extensive vamping, mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation, major key tonality, electric rhythm guitars, and a subtle use of strings. 10/10 rating.
A DIFFERENT SIDE OF ME - Allstar Weekend's first studio-produced track. Features basic rock song structures, a subtle use of vocal harmony, mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation, and major key tonality. 9/10 rating.
DANCE FOREVER - The most popular song on this album, first released as a single before "Suddenly" came out. This song features electronica influences, a subtle use of vocal counterpoint, a subtle use of paired vocal harmony, mild rhythmic syncopation, interweaving vocal harmony, extensive vamping, a clear focus on recording studio production, major key tonality, electric rhythm guitars, prominent use of synth, subtle use of fender rhodes, and upbeat lyrics. 11/10 rating.
CLOCK RUNS OUT - Probably the least popular song on the album, but still has a very catchy chorus. Features punk influences, a subtle use of vocal harmony, mild rhythmic syncopation, varying tempo and time signatures, extensive vamping, mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation, major key tonality, a vocal-centric aesthetic, and heavy electric rhythm guitars. 8/10 rating.
AMY - A nice, rock-style ballad. All I have to say is if someone is named Amy then this is the song for them. Features acoustic rock instrumentation, punk influences, mild rhythmic syncopation, acoustic rhythm piano, use of a string ensemble, extensive vamping, major key tonality, a vocal-centric aesthetic, acoustic rhythm guitars, and romantic lyrics. 9/10 rating.
JOURNEY TO THE END OF MY LIFE - An upbeat look to the future. Features basic rock song structures, punk influences, mild rhythmic syncopation, extensive vamping, major key tonality, electric instrumentation, and a subtle use of vocal harmony. 10/10 rating.
THE WEEKEND - What can you do on the weekends that you can't do during the week? This is the perfect song to wrap up the album with. Features basic rock song structures, punk influences, extensive vamping, a vocal-centric aesthetic, a subtle use of vocal harmony, mild rhytmic syncopation, electric instrumentation, heavy electric rhythm guitars, and a major key tonality. 10/10 rating.
--------------------
This album is worth every penny. It might even be a little too inexpensive for such great-sounding, feel-good music. Every song explodes with positive energy.

ALLSTAR WEEKEND is Zach on Vocals, Nathan on Guitar & Vocals, Cameron on Bass and Michael on Drums. Beyond their exceptional musicianship and stage presence, these guys write great pop songs: melodic, smart and edgy. Moreover, they wield a mature craftsmanship beyond their years. It's unmistakable in songs like the synth-hook-laden "Dance Forever" and the introspective "Journey to the End of My Life," that are featured on this upcoming debut album!

4.5 stars
Here I am, surprised again by the Jonas Brothers. What an outstanding offering.
Before I go any further, I want to explain my ranking system. I'm not comparing this CD to Abbey Road, Dark Side of the Moon, or even Thriller. I'm placing it into its intended category: young boy bands making pop music. Then I assign it a rating, 1-5 stars, based on how well I believe they represented their genre of music.
And boy (pun intended), are they making good pop music.
I came upon the Jonas Brothers last year when I saw their last CD debut in the top 5 on Billboard. As always with a group or performer of whom I'm unfamiliar, I checked them out and saw that they were "Hanson-ish". As Hanson, mostly full grown, had released a terrific and highly underrated CD (Underneath) not too long ago, I was interested to see if Jonas Brothers was another Hanson in the making. I sampled a few tracks, liked what I heard, downloaded it, and instantly loved it. I was, and still am surprised by the maturity evident in their music (if not always their lyrics).
When they announced a new album, so close upon the heels of Jonas Brothers, I was worried that they were moving too quickly, especially as I read that they had been on tour, filmed a movie, and apparently did at least one hundred million different things between then and now.
When they announced that that they would be releasing four singles off the CD prior to its release, I thought they were insane. Most bands have one commercially appealing single, if they're lucky, and if they're phenomenally talented, they'll have several. I hadn't made the jump yet to thinking that the JBs were quite that talented.
The first song, "Burnin' Up" was a great song, musically, though again the lyrics were suspect, and the video (sorry guys) was really, really cheesy. "Pushing Me Away" was a good song, but it didn't elicit the number of listens that "Burnin' Up" did. Still, I thought it was a commercially viable single. The third was "Tonight," and while that wasn't my favorite of the bunch, I still liked it. It has good guitar work, and a strong, driving beat. With that driving beat, though, I was somewhat concerned that they were leaning toward that style. We've seen it on a few of their songs already. "A Little Bit Longer" went a long way toward quelling any concerns I had, as it was very different from anything I've heard from them in the past (I am not familiar with their first CD, and wish it would be re-released). It seemed strange to listen to Nick singing a song about his diabetes, especially with the clichéd line, "you don't know what you've got until it's gone," normally reserved for human relationships, but that strangeness wore off quickly, and I found the song very touching - especially after I found the lyrics online (being a bit hard of hearing, I rely on seeing the lyrics, and often tend to judge music first on the music, second on lyrics - odd because I'm a writer...).
And now the whole CD is here.
My other concern, that they would be releasing the only songs worth listening to, thus making the CD a downer, was blown away with the first chords of BB Good. Really excellent song, amazing beat, silly but fun lyrics, and the guitar work reminiscent of some of the 70s stadium bands like Queen or Journey, with great keyboard accompaniment. And their ability to craft insanely addictive hooks is so evident here. I haven't been able to get the chorus of this song out of my mind all day.
Lovebug, too, was a standout. It had a touch of bluegrass to it, reminding me somewhat of Michelle Shocked combined with the calmer sensibilities of "Anyone Else But You", from the movie Juno. I thought the talking in the song was funny - unlike others, it didn't throw me off, but felt organic.
The rest of the CD is strong too. They've really grown, musically, and that's good to see. They're not relying on old hooks or tricks, and are, for the most part, finding new ones.
Now my concern is that they're over-saturating the market with everything JONAS, especially with the upcoming sitcom on Disney. Flames that burn too brightly when they're first lit sometimes are the quickest to die. It didn't happen to the Beatles, though, or their solo careers, so let's hope it doesn't happen with these guys. They're still very young, and they seem (well, Nick's the leader, and he seems) to have an innate ability to write music people want to listen to. I hope that they're able to stick to what they seem to best at: making great music that's easy to love.

Produced by John Fields (with Jon Lind and Kevin Jonas, Sr., serving as executive producers), "A Little Bit Longer" covers much musical and emotional ground, kicking off with the joyful jam "BB Good." Says Joe of the track, "It's a big sing-along song, and it's fun." The funky and danceable debut single, "Burnin' Up," keeps the party going, with Big Rob, the brothers' hefty security guard, rapping midtrack. "It's about this girl," adds Joe. "Maybe she's at a party, and you feel that immediate connection. You both know it's there." Though relentlessly upbeat, most songs on "A Little Bit Longer" explore star-crossed standoffs and missed romantic opportunities. Songs like "Shelf," the hard-rocking "Pushin' Me Away" and "One Man Show" survey love's unequal playing field, bad break-ups and the defiant isolation that follows. "'Shelf' is one my favorite songs on the record," says Nick. "Basically, it's about a girl that has a gallery of hearts."Other songs take a light-hearted look at the craziness of fame and fortune. "Video Girl" paints a portrait of the shallow wannabees dotting the entertainment landscape (" Move to L.A., got no talent/Not even like you won a Miss Teen pageant"), while "Lovebug" starts out as sweet-tempered acoustic love song before ending up a crashing Queen-like rocker. Of course, the brothers made sure the album breathes. The power ballad "Sorry" features classic JB harmonies and an eternal message of forgiveness. But the song that will have people talking is "A Little Bit Longer," Nick's stunning account of his struggle with diabetes. With strings underscoring a plaintive piano/vocal, he sings about his battle ("A little bit longer and I'll be fine/Waitin' on a cure/But none of them are sure").Recalls Nick, "I was having one of those days where I was discouraged. So I went into this empty hotel ballroom and wrote this song." Adds brother Kevin, "Nick sings this song every night and it brings people to tears. It's amazing." Lines, Vines and Trying Times Review

Lines, Vines and Trying Times

First, I am not in the expected fan base for Jonas Brothers. Not by a long shot. However, their lyrics are clean and their hooks catchy and the boys aren't hard on the eyes; all of that has me won over before hearing anything else. In their new CD the songs aren't just catchy, they are flat out contagious. If I am not listening, I have found myself singing or humming the songs. Repeatedly. I have to hand it to JB for maturing their sound in the right way. Most "boy bands" go on the extreme of "we're not kids anymore" when they try to branch out their sound. JB has done it right: writing relevant songs to their lives in a sophisticated and mature way. The band boasts a wider variety of instruments and the metaphorical writing suits them wonderfully. Another positive (for me at least) is being able to hear more of Kevin's singing. He's still all harmony but at least you can tell it's him singing. That's not been the case in the songs I've purchased before. Overall, this CD is excellent. It's clear the guys will be around for a while and they and their fans won't be doomed to bubblegum for the duration.
World War III: 4/5 Angsty and fiesty and fun. A bit hard to listen to the first go round because it is so aggressive but by the end you're sold.
Paranoid: 4/5 Their first release from the album. Definitely one you'll find yourself humming when you aren't paying attention. I always think I am sick of it until I hear it again and then I realize that, nope, it's still pretty good.
Fly with me: 5/5 From Night at the Museum 2 and honestly, one of the best tracks. We still get the bubbly and sweet lyrics but the music is something more than just catchy. "Peter Pan and Wendy turned out fine..." lyric just seals the deal for me.
Poison Ivy: 3/5 Most contagious track by far, literally and of course, metaphorically. We all want what isn't good for us but we all hate that we want it. Redundant lyrics but insanely awesome music.
Hey Baby: 3/5 Good but not great. Catchy but not memorable. Filler song for me. (Update: After listening to this song more, I appreciate it more than when I wrote the review. If I had to rate it now, I would actually give it a 4/5. As far as songwriting and performance goes, it's probably a 5 but it just doesn't have the memorable catch that Fly With Me or Turn Right have, so I can't give it a full 5).
Before the Storm: 4/5 Thankfully Miley doesn't over-sing and the writing and performing of this song are tender and sweet. It is clear that Nick and Miley mean every word.
What did I do to your Heart: 5/5 This song is just F-U-N, fun! Love the country influence. The only improvement that could be made is Kevin on a banjo.
Much Better: 4/5 Brilliant. I'm a T.S. fan but what a joy to see her get a dose of her own medicine. While it's never stated to be directed at her, honestly, you can't help but to raise an eyebrow at: "Got a rep for breaking hearts/ Now I'm done with superstars/ and all the tears on her guitar/ I'm not bitter..." Really been waiting for Joe to get some sort of say in the matter and this satisfies me completely. My only issue with this song is that it doesn't need a horn and guitar solo both. I'm sure it will be great live, but too much for the CD. (Update, I did see JB live, with my daughter this summer. It wasn't their full set since they were actually only headlining a city celebration. They did play this song and I have to admit, I didn't notice the horn and guitar solo being as cumbersome as it was on the CD. Either they trimmed it, or it was just so amazing live that I didn't have time to notice it. It really does play better live.)
Black Keys: 5/5 Nick's experiment with writing on the black keys of the piano. Hauntingly beautiful melody is the result and the lyrics are typical, tender Nick.
Don't Charge me for the Crime: 2/5 Like WWIII, it takes a listen or two but then you can appreciate it. Complete metaphor for how far you should or shouldn't go to help a friend (are people actually taking the lyrics seriously?) Clearly an experiment and here you see(hear) some growing pains.
Turn Right: 5/5 My absolute personal favorite on the entire CD. The all acoustic suits them so well when they let themselves commit to it completely. Kevin played piano on this at the Wal-mart sound check concert but doesn't get any listing on the CD for it, so I don't know if he recorded the piano, but if so, it's cool to hear him play other instruments.
Don't Speak: 3/5 They say they wrote it in the vein of U2, Kings of Leon, Mutemath and some others. I hear U2 all over it the most. Not my favorite song but an absolute cross-over to my age bracket (mid-30s) if they were aiming for that. Definitely a slower paced song for them as far as story telling and theme. Will do well though on radio play if they choose to release it.
Keep it Real: 4/5 Bonus track from their sitcom. Classic JB, catchy and a little kitchy but absolutely fun.
Completely worth every penny whether you're 12 or 32.
Update: Even though very few of their songs actually rated the full 5 stars for me, the album as a whole is a great package, which is why I gave it 5 stars. Sometimes breaking it apart piece by piece you can see the chinks in the armor, but over all, 3 months later, I am still listening to this entire album almost daily -- not as a teenager, but a much older than these guys adult. That alone should hold up any 5 star rating in my book.

Lines, Vines and Trying Times showcases an incredible musical journey by the Jonas Brothers, as well as their growth as songwriters and musicians. They've incorporated horns into several songs, as well as harmonicas and peddle steel guitars. The first single, "Paranoid," is a guitar driven dance evoking song, and the entire CD is a veritable smorgasbord of pop and rock gems."World War III" is a funk metaphor for a confrontational relationship.Written by Nick Jonas, he asserts, "This is a personal experience for me.`World War III' deals with the challenge of a girl who keeps attacking you, provoking you, trying to fight you, but all the while she's the only one fighting.""Fly With Me" which is also the end title credit for the upcoming "Night At The Museum 2" film (due in theaters May 22), was written by Jonas Brothers and their bass player Greg Garbowsky, and is sure to become a love song for the ages.On "Poison Ivy" Jonas Brothers added a horn section. In their summer music preview issue, Rolling Stone described the ultracatchy "Poison Ivy" as a "Weezer-ish tune about a toxic girl that you can't resist.""Hey Baby" is a classic "she done him wrong" song written entirely by Jonas Brothers."We wrote this song for the last record while on the road and felt the old school sound was more cohesive with our present style," explains Nick Jonas. With all these themes, it's easy to see how Jonas Brothers came up with the title Lines, Vines and Trying Times.Says Joe Jonas, "Lines are the "proverbial" lines people will feed you, and vines are obstacles that get in your way."Adds Kevin Jonas, "Trying Times can be relationships, or anything personal to you.No one is alone in that; we all go through it."

I bought this CD for the sole purpose of having the live version of "Turn Right". I much prefer the build-up to full band after the bridge and the extended ending with the strings to the simple arrangement on their "Lines, Vines, and Trying Times" album. I found myself loving this a bit more for the inclusion of the horns section in songs like "SOS", too. DEFINITELY an improvement!
