Too Dark Park Review

"Too Dark Park" is the best-loved Skinny Puppy album amongst hardcore fans and certainly a good place to start for the uninitiated. SP's previous effort "Rabies" (1989) is slightly easier to listen to, mostly due to slick production courtesy of Al Jourgensen (please tell me you know who that is). However, unless your mind is of the warped and delinquent variety, you'll find that Skinny Puppy is ANYTHING but easy listening. Skinny Puppy is a horror show for the ears, sonic masochism, a terrible but engaging nightmare that you can't wake from. In that respect, TDP is arguably the most quintessential Puppy album. It's harsh, dense, chaotic, and angry as hell, a culmination of the sound that they had been driving towards since they banded in 1982. (Their next album, 1991's "Last Rights", is a slight departure into experimentalism while 1996's "The Process" sounds like a completely different band.)
But be forewarned. I suspect that most people won't be able to recognize this as music. People who consider industrial-lite fluff like Filter and Stabbing Westward "cutting edge" or "hardcore" are in for a big, big (big) shock. In fact, they'd probably do best to pass on this band; I doubt they'd "get it". But you're probably here because you want something BIZARRE and DIFFERENT!
"Too Dark Park" jerks to life with "Convulsion", probably the most dense and chaotic track on the album. Inter-cut with samples from a documentary on LSD, Nivek Ogre's vocals and lyrics make it clear upfront that he's just about lost it. "Tormentor", the next track, is my favorite. Cevin Key and Dwayne Goettel morph what could've been a relatively standard industrial-dance track into something dark and sinister. "Spasmolytic" is just flat out insane. Phrases and words are strung together in maniacal fashion, suggesting an intense and hellish drug withdrawal whilst living in urban squalor. The single version of "Spasmolytic" gets the minimalist treatment, making it spookier and decidedly better (it should've been on this album, but you can get it on "The Singles Connection"). "Rash Reflection" shares a similar electro-sound with "Tormentor", but is decidedly more claustrophobic and terrifying. I'll stop here, but suffice it to say that every track is its own private nightmare and every one is equally as good as the next.
The lyrics are written in a drug-crazed William S. Burroughs style of free association. It's hard to understand what's going on, but that's all part of the experience. TDP forces you to live the nightmare of drug addiction/withdrawal and the mental chaos associated with it; the music adds emotional and visceral chaos, churning the whole vile mixture out of control. In case you're wondering, you don't have to be an addict or ex-addict to appreciate it - I've never touched a hard drug in my life. Drugs are a central theme, but there's so much more going on here.
As great as this album is, it's not even my favorite Skinny Puppy album. In the beginning they had a lo-fi 80's synth sound that was just perfect, plus they used a lot of obscure horror movie samples = fun times. So while this album is great, it gets even better.
Brap on.

To the angry reviewer below who requested evidence that an official version of this DVD will be released by the band, that information is posted on their website under "news". The story about Some Bizarre not paying Neubauten for any of their releases is well established, and the band has made enhanced, remastered editions of those Cds available through their website. This DVD will first be made available on their 25th anniversary tour, then will be open to wider distribution. So my suggestion is, be patient, don't buy this unauthorized version, do the band and the music world a favor and buy the official version when it is released. If they don't get paid for their work, how do you expect them to continue to exist? BTW, my one star rating has nothing to do with the quality of this product... it simply refelcts the fact that it is essentially a bootleg.

First of all: I love EN, I really do. And I do enjoy documentaries.
But, here, we have a major problem, this DVD SHOULD BE LABELED: "A TALK WITH THE SUPPORTERS" or "MEET THE SUPPORTERS THEMSELVES" because this is what it is.
If you expect to see the band on the road, or the band on the stage, or talking (about their music for example), this is not your lucky day. Wait for the "future concert documentaries", or become a supporter yourself and -at least- SEE YOURSELF on the screen. You will find more material of the band in the web site than in the DVD!!
Here you have a synopsis: people (supporters of the band) from everywhere talking about themselves as supporters (it's amazing, now I know). More people, ten minutes of people talking. Then, the band ON STAGE! FIVE SECONDS! Lots of more people, etc. etc. THE BAND AGAIN, TEN SECONDS, FIVE SECONDS, TWENTY SECONDS! And again people, more people. Supporters talking about reality TV... please! I don't care what you think of "The Bachelor", for example. Sorry, but I don't mind what you think about Mr. Bargeld, LET ME SEE HIM PLAY.
Finally, when you're thinking this is an extra feature -or a bad joke- and the main is about to begin, surprise, ONE SONG LIVE, ON STAGE, ONLY ONE. And that's it.
Again the people talking and talking, don't you think is enough?
At the end of the feature, two more songs, as soundtracks (for different footage, stills and end credits!).
Inside the documentary someone talks about the music industry's rules and regulations. Well, the only name on the sleeve is a BIG LIE. Do you have something to say about this?

Triptych Special Tour Edition Review

In their latest album TripTYCH, The Tea Party have very gracefully combined music elements from earlier releases 'The Edges of Twilight' and 'Transmission.' Their experimentation with world instruments is once again demonstrated in The Halcyon Days (oud) and Samsara (sitar) and their electronica fusion is also evident in singles such as 'Touch.'
This time around, however, the Tea Party have come out with a more melodious and complete album. They have balanced many elements of traditionally great rock albums with new, innovative ways of presenting music. As an example, after listening to Heaven Coming Down about twenty times, I noticed a distant bell chiming in the background. It seems that The Tea Party have made great strides to perfecting subtle layered textures in music.
TripTych also features The Tea Party's first cover song -- track six is The Messenger by Daniel Lanois, a longstanding features of their live concerts but never before released.
Canadian Singles (in order): Heaven Coming Down, Touch, The Messenger, These Living Arms and, most recently, Gone. Gone is my favourite song on TripTych, featuring heavy violas and cellos from the Montreal Symphony Orchestra as well as a acousitic guiter tuned normally (rare!) and Jeff Martin's emotional ballad about a lost love.
TripTych is an excellent album by three of the most talented muscians in rock music today. Give it a spin...

WWIII Tour 2003 Review

WWIII Tour 2003

What is WWIII Tour 2003 in comparison to Sturm Und Drang Tour 2002? Imagine a bullet versus a nuclear warhead. Exactly the answer. WWIII Tour DVD is an awesome selection of live performances including some golden oldies such as "Light", "Juke-Joint Jezebel" and "A Drug Against War" which have been "rocked up" to sound like they would actually fit onto the album wwiii.
The Camera work is so much better than Sturm Und Drang, using special effects etc, it actually looks proffessional, including DVD menus and stuff, it's all great and new-looking.
The Bonus footage is great. There is a lot more than Sturm Und Drang including some funny sections like "WWIII Concert Intro (making of)" and "Whale Watching with KMFDM". You get an in-depth look and feeling of what the whole band is like if you didn't know before.
Raymond is very funny and hogs the camera a lot, Lucia is in this DVD more than Sturm Und Drang as is everyone else. Even the Crew get their own little sections. The DVD captures the life and essence of the tour and KMFDM, it's humorous and adrenaline pumping.
If you love KMFDM, this is a MUST! It is in NTSC format, but it worked in my PAL region PS2, which amazed me, and Sturm Und Drang did too! KMFDM are a band that write some awesome music and love to have fun, all is told in KMFDM WWIII TOUR 2003! Don't hesistate, don't think, buy it now!!!!!!! Support your favorites and rip the system, KMFDM!

KMFDM - Sturm & Drang Tour 2002 (2002) Review

KMFDM - Sturm and Drang Tour 2002 (2002)

A perfect purchase for the true KMFDM fan. This is more of a well-done documentary on KMFDM than a live DVD. It shows the daily rigors and trivialities of the bandmembers as they go through their tour, interspersed with footage of the concerts, one song at a time. The DVD was mastered by Sascha himself and has a good sound to it (much better than the corresponding CD). It lacks a few of the better PIG songs, though, that they played on the tour, hence only 4 instead of 5 stars.
