I was very excited to hear that this was coming out as I have seen Steve Miller in concert and it was great. This DVD is well done with good sound. As others have stated, the band is in good form. I do have a few problems with it though.
1) The documentary is interesting and it was nice to hear Steve talk about his past in Chicago but I felt the person conducting the interview was a complete waste. It was nice to let Steve do most of the talking but on the other hand, the lack of actual questioning almost made him seem uncomfortable. The shots of the interviewer just nodding his head were also not needed.
2) Song selection. While I can appreciate the need for Steve to pay tribute to his blues roots with the 3 covers, I felt short-changed by the lack of material from some of his albums. Nothing from Italian X-rays, Born 2 B Blue, Livin' in the 20th Century and Wide River and even the widely regarded mis-fire Circle of Fire. Not only are there hit songs on most of these albums, but there are good blues tracks.
3) The rap section during Fly Like An Eagle is oddly out of place.
I still give this package a high rating because of the value for the $ and even with the above albums not represented, you still can't go wrong. At least the cover songs were well performed.

Brave New World Review

This was not my first album as a teenager, by far, but it was my first Steve Miller album. Steve Miller's third album, Brave New World, is among the best rock and roll ever. This album, which I first got when it was originally released, has fueled a 34 year love for his music. In all that time, it still remains my favorite rock and roll album ever.
Though the original vinyl has long since been lost, every time I have rebuilt my music collection as I raised a family, Brave New World was always the first album or CD I purchased.
There are only 9 songs on the album, but there are no fillers - this is all great stuff. I am not sure why it is, but the title track, Brave New World, has never made it into any of Steve's many, many "greatest hits" compilations even though it is one of his best works ever. Of course, 6 songs out of 9 on this album regularly show up in the compiliations: Celebration Song, Kow Kow Calculator, Seasons, Space Cowboy, LT`s Midnight Dream, and My Dark Hour. My Dark Hour, by the way, includes Paul McCartney on guitar as Paul Ramone.
So with 6 out of 9 songs considered to be among his greatest hits - and the other three songs are great music as well - this album belongs in every Steve Miller Band or other classic rock and roll collection, no matter how many versions of The Joker and Fly Like An Eagle you have in the compilations.
Updated: Just for the record, track 5 is not Kow Kow. It is Kow Kow Calculator. While the track was called Kow Kow on some of the compilations later on, the original name, as it was on the LP and still is shown on this CD, is Kow Kow Calculator.

When Miller, Mallaber, and Turner took their chums into the studios to record 'Fly Like an Eagle', they emerged with 22 tracks. Some may have noticed that there are only 12 tracks on '... Eagle'. Rather than release what would have been one of the greatest double studio LPs of all time, Miller decided to release a magnificent single LP there and then, and hold on to the remaining tracks for the next release. No way could the tracks he held onto be considered less outstanding than the ones that made it for immediate release.
If anything, 'Book of Dreams' is an even better album. It has the two excellent singles 'Jet Airliner' and 'Jungle Love'. It also has the wonderful 'Swingtown', which was typically the first pick of many TV and FM radio stations when the album was first released. (In the UK, the Old Grey Whistle Test played the track to one of those marvellous American black-and-white cartoons of the 1920s or 30s.)
But the stand-out track -- the real reason why you cannot just buy the Greatest Hits album -- is the sublime 'Sacrifice', preceded by 'Electro Lux Imbroglio'. Les Dudek's guitar solo on 'Sacrifice' is quite simply one of the most sublime I've heard -- a 1970s peak which has never since been bettered in mainstream rock.
The only question remaining is which version of the CD to buy. Personally I would spend a little extra to get the remastered version from Eagle. I have the 1992 Australian pressing from Liberation Records (manufactured by Disctronics) and though the synthesizers are very sharp, the drum sound on tracks like 'Jet Airliner' is a little dull.
Which you buy, you won't be disappointed.
