(More customer reviews)Before this album was released, the Christian music industry knew a totally different Amy Grant. This was the woman who had given them praise classics like "El Shaddai", touching melodies like "Fathers's Eyes", and sweet, reflective tunes like "Giggle".
The first 10 seconds of this album revealed another side to Amy's talent. The hard-driving beat of "Love of Another Kind" marked the beginning of Amy's cross-over into popular rock... And I, for one, was thrilled! Always shooting from the hip, Amy Grant delved into this new style of music with an honesty message of hope that shines with each successive track.
This is fun music: music to crank up in the car as you drive down the road. "Find A Way" and "Wise Up" join "Love" as the albums most "rocky" and catchy tunes. "Everywhere I Go" is a beautifully arranged and well written expression of hope, and "Who to Listen To" speaks of the choices we face when we choose who to trust. By far, the most fun tune is the aforementioned "Wise Up" which has been the cause of more near-accidents on the American highway than should probably be counted.
The title, "Unguarded" comes from a background lyric in the song, "Fight" ...'I've got to stay open, keep defenses all down (unguarded heart) Don't want to be hiding, when the love comes 'round. '
There are four covers to this album, with Amy striking different poses in her now infamous spotted jacked. As a plus, listen for then-husband Gary Chapman doing background vocals on many of the tracks.
I wanted to point out that my opinion here is a bit biased...I am quite the Amy-fan. For the diehard Amy-ite, this is one of the best albums she has ever done and if you don't have it, you should click the button NOW. For the casual or non-fan, this album contains many fun songs with a definite 80s flare, and I really do believe that you would enjoy them.

Adoration: Worship Album Review

(More customer reviews)Newsboys join the worship trend with this CD. Unlike many others, however, 8 of the 10 songs are Newsboys originals and only two of those are live versions of songs they've previously released.
The CD opens with "He Reigns," one of my two favorites from the disc. This song is a joyful proclamation of God's power and a bit of a reminder of how important it is for Christians to proclaim it.
My other favorite is the final song "Hallelujah," a look ahead to the never ending praise session in Heaven.
In between are more great songs like "Great is Your Faithfulness," (not the hymn, but just as good) "Take My Hands (Praises)," live songs "Lord (I Don't Know)" and "It is You," and the covers "You are my King (Amazing Love)" and "In Christ Alone."
I'm not a big Newsboys fan, so I can't comment on the style of this CD in relation to their other releases, but I do know that it's gotten lots of play time since I bought it.
As an added bonus, the guitar chords for 7 of the songs are included with the lyrics in the booklet. While it seems funny that they didn't include the chords next to the other three songs, I'm very happy to have those 7.
I'm glad I took a chance and bought this CD. It will be pointing me to God for many years to come.

(More customer reviews)I remember purchasing my original copy of Lead Me On 20 years ago! This special edition sounds great and I love the acoustic versions of some of the classic recordings from this CD. Any Amy fan must have this anniversary edition in their collection!

It's a Wonderful Christmas Review

(More customer reviews)Michael W. Smith has released two previous Christmas CDs, and they are staples of my December. This new release will be taking an honored place beside them in my December rotation.
This release is a combination of his two previous releases. It mixes the choral feeling of the first one with the pop of the second one. And, as something new, he mixes in lots of instrumental pieces. 5 of the 11 songs are fully instrumental. But the orchestra sounds wonderful.
What is truly amazing is that this release sounds Christmassy from start to finish from the very first listen. Only one track, "What Child is This" is a traditional piece. Michael wrote or co-wrote everything else. Yet everything feels like an old familiar friend.
Some of the instrumental tracks sound like the soundtrack to a movie. And one feels like a missing piece from the Nutcracker.
Of the other songs, most focus on the birth of Christ. They are wonderful choir pieces. "Christmas Day" focuses on our modern Christmas celebration, and it brings a smile to my face as I think about all the traditions. Finally, the disc closes with "All Year Long," a quiet song that wishes us the happiness of Christmas the rest of the year.
This is a great release. Buy it and enjoy it for Christmases to come.

Remedy Review

(More customer reviews)After A Collision, what was DC*B supposed to do? That record stands as a masterpiece of Christian music and rock music in general. Yet Remedy is not the disappointment it could have been.
Remedy is a return to form for the Waco, TX based worship group. What you'll get is 10 tracks of solid praise music, in true David Crowder Band genre-mixing electronically influenced style. This is the music you'll be hearing at forward-thinking churches around the world for the next few years, and if you get the record now you'll enjoy hearing the songs all the more. Standout tracks include "Glory of It All" with its instantly memorable hook, the borderline danceable "Can You Feel It?", and the title track.
All in all, this record is one that Christian music enthusiasts and worship leaders should definitely own. But if you're a fan of music in general, please do yourself a favor and get A Collision. It's not to be missed.

Portable Sounds Review

(More customer reviews)I was actually able to snag this CD at Wal Mart last Friday (5 days before it officially came out), seems someone didn't pay attention to street date...oh well.
Once again Toby has done it, he follows a trend that I see in too few of bands these days. Instead of pumping out 11-13 tracks of 'been there, done that', 'Portable Sounds' takes on a fresh sound and theme.
With Momentum being the 'Hard Rock' album, Diverse City being the 'Hip Hop/dance' album, Portable Sounds captures the feel of both previous efforts while throwing in a fresh sound. Portable is a little more mellow in terms of rock but the power and energy is there as always. To me, I feel a mid range 'DC Talk/Supernatural' kind of sound a little throughout the CD, so it kind of takes you back.
I feel the lyrics overall of 'Portable' are an improvement to Diverse City, where I felt the Christian theme dropped just a little, yeah it was still there but not as strong as I usually like it. Songs like 'Made to Love' and especially 'Boomin'' are catchy.
Tru Dog makes a reappearance in the awesome and hilarious track #8. I can just see this kid following his dad's footsteps in a few years. And again, Kirk Franklin has a track with Toby that is much better than his previous appearence on Momentum's 'J Train'. Before it seemed like he just kind of sat there and talked, but this time he actually does some singing, the track overall it pretty good and I'm not much of a KF fan.
And finally, more than once Toby has some witty and funny skits between songs which I think makes the album that much more fun. Some I listened to over and over again.
Overall, I think this CD is another dead-on bullseye for Toby, even under the giant shadow of his two previous records, Portable Sounds easily comes out able to stand on it's own as a solid album. Even with it's more (dare I say it) mellow sound compared to the extreme musical themes of Momentum and Diverse, Portable Sounds is without a doubt one of my favorite CD's and will please both newcomers and older fans alike. For a 40+ year old (that's right, go check out his birthday) Toby rocks just as hard (if not harder) than anything coming out these days. Amazing record, get it.
