(More customer reviews)Michael W. Smith has released two previous Christmas CDs, and they are staples of my December. This new release will be taking an honored place beside them in my December rotation.
This release is a combination of his two previous releases. It mixes the choral feeling of the first one with the pop of the second one. And, as something new, he mixes in lots of instrumental pieces. 5 of the 11 songs are fully instrumental. But the orchestra sounds wonderful.
What is truly amazing is that this release sounds Christmassy from start to finish from the very first listen. Only one track, "What Child is This" is a traditional piece. Michael wrote or co-wrote everything else. Yet everything feels like an old familiar friend.
Some of the instrumental tracks sound like the soundtrack to a movie. And one feels like a missing piece from the Nutcracker.
Of the other songs, most focus on the birth of Christ. They are wonderful choir pieces. "Christmas Day" focuses on our modern Christmas celebration, and it brings a smile to my face as I think about all the traditions. Finally, the disc closes with "All Year Long," a quiet song that wishes us the happiness of Christmas the rest of the year.
This is a great release. Buy it and enjoy it for Christmases to come.

100% Live a La Tour Eiffel Review

(More customer reviews)This concert at the foot of the Eiffel Tower was attended by well over 500,000 and almost 10 million more watched on TV in a country with less than one-third the population of the US. (in the US that would be over 1,500,000 attending and 30 million at home watching) You do not need to understand French to really enjoy both the ear candy and eye candy this DVD provides. For two hours and twenty minutes let the world go away and just enjoy.

Let's Rock Again (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)"Let's Rock Again!" tells the story of Joe Strummer, a man who ended up having to remind the world that "I was in the Clash." Dick Rude's film, shot in 2001 and 2002, followed the onetime punk star and his new band, the Mescaleros, as they toured the States and Japan. It covers the 18 months before the singer's death of a heart defect.
The film and DVD extras show Strummer signing endless autographs while listening to fans tell how he changed their lives. "Everybody's got a story to tell," Strummer explains. "You can't hurry them along." Rude calls his old friend "a born sweetheart."
Strummer took a decade off after the Clash went supernova. His young band was a hard sell, but the music was good and his shows made fans happy with "nuggets from the past." The main DVD extra is a treat: Strummer and the boys working through "The Harder They Come" and dub-era Clash songs like "Armagideon Time."
Director Rude did a 15-minute Q&A session at the Tribeca film festival, included here as an extra. He tells the audience it was "very difficult for me to cut this movie" after Strummer died.
Other extras have Strummer talking about his life on the road. "Performing is partly joy and partly terror, and you have to be able to deal with both emotions. It takes a lot of spirit to perform." One of the last extra clips has Strummer considering the death of another punk star, Joey Ramone: "It doesn't seems real. ... He was one of the best."
Images are full-screen; audio is in stereo. The presentation is good enough, despite some here-and-there synch problems.
