'Tis the season for a slew of greatest hits albums. The release of Fall Out Boy's 'Believers Never Die' may seem unnecessary or another ploy made by the record company to cash in with one of its biggest acts, and perhaps so, but listening to this compilation of the group's hit songs reminds the listener what's kept this group around and in the limelight for six years now. Let's get something out of the way. There are a few new tracks offered for the listener or FOB fan: "Alpha Dog" and "From Now On We're Enemies." The rest are some of the big singles released by the group from the past six years; the rest are tracks that were released on other albums or EPs. In all, you're getting a collection of the groups popular released singles and some added tracks that've made an impression.
The Good: Since 'Believers Never Die' focuses on the top singles from the group, this release has only the best of Fall Out Boy rather than filler tracks that never made an impression. The best tracks are from their album 'Infinity On High', where the group definitely hit its stride and released a series of catchy tunes that caught everyone's attention, including "This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race", "Thnks fr th Mmrs", "I'm Like A Lawyer With The Way I'm Always Trying To Get You Off (Me & You)". It also includes the Fall Out Boy standards "Sugar, We're Goin Down", "Dance, Dance", and "A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More "Touch Me"". This release includes some of the group's early releases (before they exploded onto the scene with 'From Under the Cork Tree' as well as songs from 'Folie A Deux', their 2008 that didn't make that big of a splash. With the standards being included an added tracks like their Michael Jackson "Beat It Cover" featuring John Mayer on guitar, this is a release for those who may not have all of the group's albums. You're also treated to all of the group's videos with commentary on the limited edition, making it a bit more worth the purchase. Though, the group (to me) is known more for their music than their videos with the exception of one or two.
The Bad: The 'bonus' tracks are just okay to me. When stacked against the group's older material, the tracks seem a tad bit weak and forgettable. As with any greatest hits package, the weakness is that since the music has previously been released, any real fan of the group will already have purchased a majority of these songs. The new songs "Alpha Dogs" and "Believers Never Die" are iffy tracks; perhaps worth downloading the mp3s from Amazon.com separately but they don't sell the album by themselves.
In all, it's a nice collection of music. If "Believers Never Die" accomplishes anything it shows off the best and the talent of the group for producing infectiously addictive songs. It's a must own for any real Fall Out Boy fan; it'd be a nice purchase for someone who may have only purchased one or two albums from the group in the past. Definitely worth checking out.
Listen To These: "Beat It", "This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race", "From Now On We're Enemies"
