My name is Wally Gator, and besides being a rock and roller-face; I am also a part time funkateer. Sure the booty babes consider me more of a puppy-dog on the dance floor, but I ain't no Sir Nose Devoid... I still got the funk. I'm also pretty much into my collection of vinyl... vinyl just feels so right, you know what I mean?
That being said, I have decided to review this album; P-Funk Live Earth Tour, from 1977, the vinyl edition. Because this is one of those albums that essentially feels alot better (and wetter,) when on the turntable. Besides the fact that P-Funk always sounds smoother on wax, this edition actually contains one more (ESSENTIAL!!!) track that is not contained on the CD. That being a six and a half minute, soul jam, led on vocals by the beautiful Brides Of Funkenstein, with Glen Goins, and an extensive and crucial guitar line, ala Eddie Hazel. The track isn't live, and never really fit with the rest of the album, but it is without a doubt a lost gem that you should have, and never should have been clipped from the CD release.
As for the rest of the album, IT JAMS! I love the P-Funk. They take the breed and morph it into their own thang. I will tell you that P-Funk is pretty much it's own genre as far as I'm concerned. The album came out of the P-Funk Earth Tour from 1977, which was helmed by Parliament, but was tailed by pretty much every act that George Clinton had his hands in at the time. P-Funk empire reigned supremem at this time, with both Parliament and Funkadelic respectively burning up the R&B charts. Never before or since, do I think that the R&B charts jammed so well, with as much trip vibe, or wacky flow. The Funk Mob blazed through the earth with a totally refreshing and unique breed of music tailored especially to blow your mind. Nothing gets the groove going better than P-Funk. Even today. I dare you to go see P-Funk live in the year 2008, and not have your socks blown off. They will take you to places you've never been, but in 1977, they weilded more power and influence by the mega tons; and were caravaning some of the most important names in the biz as well. I recommend just about any Parliament or Funkadelic album from 1970 through 1981, they are all great... but Live Earth Tour displays the most, how they blazed up the stage... I mean, the vast combination of sounds. Funk is their business. And they run their business well. Even this puppy can understand to the fullest. Rock on.
