(More customer reviews)Mick Karn was born on the island of Cyprus, with the music/culture of Egypt, Israel, Syria, and Turkey all around him. At a young age he moved to London, later forming the band "Japan" with his school chum David Sylvian. Mick plays bassoon, clarinet, keyboards, and other instruments on his recordings, but in the context of Japan he held down the low notes. Early on, he pulled the frets out of his bass, and his trademark fretless playing quickly developed. In 1983, the band dissolved, leaving Karn with a unique style and plenty of musical inspiration. His studio work with other musicians such as Midge Ure and Joan Armatrading is pretty interesting, and is worth investigating. Check out "Dalis Car" (with former Bauhaus vocalist Peter Murphy) for evidence of surreal atmospheric pop; take note of the fact the Mick plays ALL the instruments on this CD.
The atmospheric multicultural grooves on Bestial Cluster are evidence of his maturing musicianship and compositional abilities. It is perhaps his most musically complex CD to date, and he has said it was among his most challenging endeavors. You will frequently find him collaborating with guitarist/loopist David Torn. Their complimentary musical explorations are always interesting (listen to "Polytown" for a good starting point). David Torn once described Mick Karn by saying "It's as if Bootsy was Moroccan." Hard to top that :)
Torn lends some tasty guitar work to this effort, and it's well worth finding a copy. Take a listen to this CD and be entranced by an intoxicating tapestry of sounds.

Heartbeat Review

(More customer reviews)Sakamoto is the master of all genres, and this album is no exception.
Begins with warmth, ends with peace, and a smattering of feelings in between. This runs the gamut of emotions, and is able to move you along with them.
IF you want to enhance your mood and pick yourself up, get this CD.
Track 4, LuLu is a very urban feel, much like Take Five. High Heels, on the other hand, (which is from a movie) is a very rainy-day in Paris feel, you can almost see rose petals falling on a gray backdrop. Very touching.
I give this CD a high rating, and think it is universally appealing.

Freed from Nashville's constraints Mary-Chapin delivers possibly her best album ever. Eloquent, elegant and elegaic, she is a master of simplifying the most complicated truths and singing them in a melodious, sparse, straightforward manner.

Here she writes politically ("I'm the decider, like some kind of Messiah") on the brilliant "On With The Song" and a song about Hurricane Katrina refugees "Houston", as well as tenderly on "Closer And Closer Apart" about a disintegrating relationship and about just the opposite on "Here I Am." Other fantastic songs are the rocking "It Must Have Happened," "Twilight," "Why Shouldn't We," and the wonderful "Your Life Story" which asks the question "maybe love is all anybody should believe in?"

Something you can believe in is "The Calling" is an exquisite CD that is a must have for anyone who believes in clearheaded, intelligent songs lovingly delivered. Extra points for both the production and engineering which are pristine and flawless.

When you get The Calling - answer. Greatness awaits you.

(More customer reviews)Okay, I'm not gonna waste time on Disc 1 because it's a collection of hits and favorites that any Michael Fan is well enough familiar with. So let's just skip right to Disc Two.
Scream-Truly the most Dance Oriented song on the album, but a rare occasion in which we get Brother to Sister love, and anger, both shouting about injustice. A Great song, a great video. And great beginning.
They Don't Care About Us-A powerful song really. Great beat, Some later versions are censored because of some alleged "anti-semetic" lyrics. Put it doesn't hurt the song. Michael's anger somewhat begins here. Another great video.
Stranger in Moscow-A beautiful ballad. By far one of Michael's best. Haunting to the Extreme with a chorus that could bring a tear to your eye. "How does it feel when you're alone and it's cold inside?" A beautiful music video.
This Time Around-I like this song. Has a good beat to it. A tad self-indulgent, but I'd say he's earned it. Great Rap bridge by the Notorius B.I.G.
Earth Song-One of his most powerful ballads to date. Most of us have seen the video, so we know Michael is true to his subject matter. Michael hits it hard on this song, worthy of buying the album just for this one.
D.S.-Who is Dom Sheldom? And why is Michael so angry at him? This isn't a bad song, but it's the one I listen to the least.
Money-Powerful lyrics. Although Michael doesn't sing a whole lot. More of a spoken word, but good none the less. Still Michael a bit angry in this one.
Come Together-This one is alot of fun really. Shows his funk-rock side with this cover of the old Beatles song. Truly verges on remaking it better than the original.
You Are Not Alone-How many awards did this one win? Too many to count. This song, written by R. Kelly, shows off the passion he still has for a love ballad. Very artistic video with his ex-wife Lisa Marie-Presley.
Childhood-Some may call this song sappy, not me, it's beautiful. In our own ways I think most all of us could relate to this song. Poetic lyrics, well orchestrated instrumentals, and the video has a quite an interesting original concept to it.
Tabloid Junkie-A song with a strong message more people need to pay attention to. Not to mention having to do with Michael's more recent past at that time being a victim of the Tabloid Junkies.
2 Bad-This song has a cool beat, and it's a good dance song. The only part I don't really enjoy is Shaq rapping in the middle. Who the hell ever said that Shaq could rap? He couldn't wrap cheese in a taco!! At least the parts with Michael are cool.
HIStory-More of an anthem than a song. But amazing none the less. Using quotes and recorded speeches from pinical moments in History. Proving Michael respects many people, and is inspired by greatness, causing him greatness as well.
Little Susie-If he ever decides to stop being a pop singer, this song shows proof he could compose music for movies and seriously win OSCARS for it. It's sad, haunting, beautiful. A great direction for Michael.
Smile-I can't think of a better way to end this record. This track, which is a tribute and dedication to one of Michael's heroes, Charlie Chaplin. You can't help but smile I think when you listen to this track, because it's so beautiful, and Michael whistling at the end gives off the most lovely example of Michael's playful side.
A wonderful CD, truly worthy of all good credit. His most mature and artistic album to date. Get one for yourself, you won't regret it.

Dixie Chicks - Top of the World Tour Live Review

(More customer reviews)I love the Dixie Chicks, and their performances in the concerts that provided footage for this DVD were probably great - but there's no way to tell.
From what I can see, this DVD was put together by monkeys who had available an unlimited supply of espresso and cocaine. No shot lasts longer than two seconds, and footage from many different concerts is slammed together pell-mell with no regard for anything like continuity. The camera shots themselves are about as creative as a home movie of a high school football game, and the general feeling I get is that the people who made this didn't really give a damn about the Dixie Chicks, or about anything except slapping this DVD together with nail guns, pressure board, duct tape and fast-drying glue, and then dropping it on store shelves to start the cash hose flowing.
The Dixie Chicks deserve much, much better than this, and luckily they get it in "An Evening with the Dixie Chicks," which is the best DVD of their music to date. If you bought this garbage, go exchange it for "An Evening," and you'll be glad you did.

(More customer reviews)I don't care what anyone says, but the Dixie Chicks rock. And it will be sad if we let their beliefs (or anyone's beliefs) from preventing them from greatest. After saying that, let me just say that this is one of the best live album I have ever heard. A collection of their biggest hits from their previous 3 albums, this cd shines BRIGHTLY. Not only do these girls ROCK, but you can hear the passion in their voices and the way they play. You can feel the energy of the fans and it really inspires you. This double cd makes you feel like you are at an actual show. Also there are great pics that goes along with this release. I almost missed this cd, because they are not promoting it. Most people don't even know about it. But don't let that prevent you from buying this cd. Can't wait for a new album.
