This has to be one of the most coveted music purchases that I have ever made. Both cds are fantastic. Each cd has songs that are approximately 4-5 minutes in length. Claudio's long-time dedication to his fan base coupled with his practicality and eye for value results in him giving excellent bang for his fans' buck. He has been creating, promoting and producing a long time and this honed experience shows in the superior, yet affordable products that he creates. This cd set is totally worthy of attention and purchase. Trust me, eventhough there are no guarantees in life, in this instance there is. I guarantee that you will not have any buyer's regret-at all! And, what's even better than value is the quality of this cd set. On both cds you actually feel like you are at the concert in London, England where this cd set was recorded. Claudio's mature lyrics (which I wish he had published in the cd's jacket- which, granted, would have made it understandably cumbersome so I comprehend why he did not, but it is still nonetheless disappointing to all of us fans who would like to keep up and form our own artistic yet personal interpretations)and exceptional sound can not help but seduce you. Picking which cd I like "better" in this 2 cd set is like picking a favorite child- it just cannot be done. Since I do not have children, I am going to take the shameless liberty and say that I would prefer cd 1 to cd 2. And, if I had to pick some songs that are my favorites they would be "Per il mondo" track no. 1 off cd 1; track no. 11 "Quante volte" off cd 1; track no. 13 "Sono Io" off cd 1; and, track no. 4 off cd 1- "E tu come stai." And, I will be super brazen and go further in saying that if I were to select my favorite out of my favorites, it would definitely be, again, track no. 11, "Quante Volte." This song especially ranks up there with one of the most beautiful songs that I have ever heard. If I were to characterize it, "Quante Volte" is pure mature, sophisticated, introspective italian pop sung with a full, experienced heart and bluesy honesty. Think Lisa Stansfield and Simply Red put together. Where track 11 speaks to personal examination, "Per il mondo" rocks in its slightly sarcastic, "forcingly trying to overcome delusion and face the truth" exploration of a cyclical, very real yet simultaneously simple and complex, world with biting honesty and love. A constant struggle of affirmation and a sheer, open invitation to join the realistic world and live in the present, with reflection, unashamed and courageous. Track no. 13, "Sono Io" is another instance of Claudio lifting a mirror to the face of honesty. When I think of this song, I think of Hamlet's quote, "To thine own self be true." A disquieting reflection of looking inward with majesty, total intention and a spontaneous frequency. It seems as though Claudio embarks on a quest for self-edification similar to Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror." He seemingly takes the introspective man and turns him on his head in an almost "I am [man], hear me roar" wherein he reminisces on the image of a true man channeling Helen Reddy's American feministic pride and challenges it with its masculine, italian, sexy and modern counter-part. Track no. 4, "E tu come stai," is an authentic nod and anthemn to friendship. Whether you have friends or not, turn this hit on and you'll be transported to the world of your virtual friend, Claudio Baglioni. The man is so wise that anyone who is a good friend or who aspires to be should pay close attention to this single as it captures the basic human need for connection and warmest regards. As an aside, check out track no. 4, a song called "Avrai." Although I find this song to be a bit too "heavy" for me, my understanding is that this song was written for his first son. It is a legitimate truthful account done with genuine and very real humility. A tribute of which any son would be proud. It is precisely these rich qualities that make the appeal of Claudio-a true Roman (he was actually born in Rome) with, on this album, total London influence. He is as wealthy and sophisticated in heart, mind and talent as the Uber-cities themselves. It is no accident that this cd was recorded right there in London. Only the sophistication of Rome and England could produce such quality art. The only downfall that I can think of when I think of Claudio Baglioni is that I only discovered him in a December 31, 2010 (New Years Eve) concert performance that was broadcast live from Rome, Italy. The benefit concert was held in association with another concert in Rimini, Italy. You can google this performance on youtube ("L'anno che verra- Rimini.") I was fortunate enough to subscribe to the RAI channel through my cable company so that I could actally see the live performance as it was happening. I could not have asked God to send me a more perfect New Year's Eve celebration all in the privacy and convenience of my own home. I watched the program with my parents, who were both born in Italy and slightly older that Claudio himself, and when i commented on his modern, sophisticated, lux quality of italian pop, my parents told me that he has been "around for a while." (If only 60 looked this good!)I was so surprised and ashamed that I had never heard of him before. I later went on Amazon.com and saw the rich selection of Claudio Baglioni's pop history available for sale. What a fortunate, prolific cache! Thanks Amazon for stocking such musical perfection. Again, I urge any music connoisseur to start with this cd and then branch out. You won't be disappointed and you'll notice that he has only gotten better through his career. I am also disappointed that I missed this world tour; especially, his Atlantic City, NJ concert which is in my home state. I hope that Claudio never stops touring because one of my goals in life is to actually see him live. I think that whatever the cost of his tickets are seeing him live and whatever the costs are of collecting his music, he is as important to any rock fan as Pavarotti was to Opera. No attendance or collection will ever be forgotten or enough. Claudio is truly an unprecendented musical genius. In this album, let his years of experience wash over you like a sweet, flawless air of an authentic italian passeggiata like only the italians can do it. Relish in the sensory, sublime experience that emananates from Claudio- no unartifical drugs needed. Just a pure, natural high. Bravo Claudio!! Show why, in my humble opinion, the Roman Empire still ranks number 1 all of these years later. As a t-shirt once worn by Madonna in one of her music videos said, "Italians (just) do it better" and Claudio Baglioni proves it. Take that naysayers!! (Note: as a concession to London, the British empire may have been no.2. Again, as an italian-american, I need to give biased patriotic credit where fair credit is do. The Italians must come first and our founding fathers an extremely close second. Sorry George- the electoral college of my italian-american self has voted!!
Long live the king-- Claudio Baglioni!!! :)
