If you have an interest in standup, this CD is a special treat as he talks about how he prepared for his first Tonight Show appearance, what classes he might recommend for those interested in comedy, and running from club to club in New York constantly honing his set...for 18 months, completely unaware of what he was really getting himself ready for. If you're looking for material more like the Seinfeld TV show (which this is definitely not), check out Seinfeld's "I'm Telling You For the Last Time" CD.

Rough Around the Edges: Live from Madison Square Garden Review

(More customer reviews)First and foremost, allow me to start by saying I am a huge Dane Cook fan. I have seen him two times (Once at Tourgasm and once at a separate venue)and both times he was amazing. As you might guess I also own all of his material and what isn't available to purchase I have downloaded and have watched hundreds of times...
So that all said, why give this set three-stars? First, it's short. Compared to any of his other releases this one falls way below par length-wise. It just clocks in at barely over an hour. Comparatively you could say, "His first album 'Harmful if Swallowed' was 59 minutes." You would be right, but when you include the huge amount of featurettes and extras that were included in the dvd portion of the disc, it's well worth it's weight. On 'Rough...' of the total 15 tracks on the cd portion, only 13 of them were put on the dvd. All in all it feels light and a bit rushed.
Now to what matters: Material.
This is easily Dane's weakest standup thusfar. Although the crowd is electric and laughs at every joke he makes, it still doesn't make up for some material that seems like he's trying to stretch a concept way too-far, past the usual point and into something far less funny.
Some of his jokes had me laughing out loud but for the most part it wasn't the same laughter I had on his previous albums. Listening to 'Retaliation' or 'Harmful if Swallowed' the first time through, I was literally brought to tears at how funny, spontaneous, and just completely absurd Dane Cook was when he was in his zone. First and second time through this cd I found myself listening to his stories, patiently waiting for something funny, rather then laughing while he was telling them.
Obviously if you are a DC fan you already own this collection and most of you will probably think it's great. If you haven't heard DC before I recommend starting with 'Harmful if Swallowed' and move up from there. This is a fine intermission in the 'Dane Cook Show' but will most likely not be remembered in the same way his first two legendary albums were.

His third full-length, following the amazing showing of his first two CDs, "Harmful If Swallowed" and "Retaliation", which have sold over 1.2 million copies each and are still going strong. This double digipak contains a full-length CD of Cook's best new material, as well as a DVD of the live show, recorded in front of tens of thousands of adoring fans at MSG. Hands down the most energetic comedian today, Dane is best served with both audio and video components.

Katt Williams: American Hustle The Movie Review

(More customer reviews)When you watch American Hustle, get ready for an experience like now other. American Hustle is a meshing of a cinematic intro with the side-splitting comedy of Katt Williams and company. The feature starts with Katt getting ready for a important Hollywood meeting to discuss movie possibilities starring the up-and-coming superstar. He ultimately passes on the ridiculous movie pitches and ventures out back on the road with fellow comics Red, Luenell, and Melanie Camacho. The four comics and Katt's dog hit the road for 20-city, 40-show tour that eventually culminates to the final show in Chicago. And it is at this point that viewers are treated to the feature-length concert footage of Katt Williams. The DVD closes with Katt Williams sharing the stage and the mic with Chi-Town's own Da Brat and everybody's favorite honorary pimp Snoop Dogg.
Packaged as a theatrical comedy, American Hustle evolves mostly around Katt's stand-up, a routine that can basically be deemed Pimp Chronicles 2. The material is original and will have you laughing out loud. Although we are treated to a handful of stand-up scenes from Red, Luenell, and Melanie, it would have been nice to actually see more of their routine, if not their entire sets. But the material that we are treated to is nothing short of hilarious, with Luenell giving the funniest anecdotes of the three. And of course Katt's spin on life, love, and relationships is on par with everything else that the budding star has showcased, including its predecessor The Pimp Chronicles Part 1. With extended footage of the skit 'Brokebeak Penguins', and his spoof on the movie 300, and about a dozen outtakes, this DVD is unique in its presentation and captures the ingenious comedic styling of Katt Williams. Any fan of Katt Williams will not be disappointed with American Hustle.

Weapons of Self Destruction (2010) Review

(More customer reviews)I had the privilege of seeing this show live. We were originally supposed to see it in March but it was postponed because right before our original date because he had his heart surgery. As a result, we saw the show in October.
I had been laid off for the second time in a year the day of the show and I almost was too depressed to go. But I had been waiting soooo long to see him and spent so much money on the tickets that we went.
The show is definitely different than some of his earlier shows -- he worked in a lot of material about his heart surgery and aging in general and it made him seem more "human". However, in typical Robin manner -- it was so frenetic and off the wall that I still laughed so hard I ached by the end of the show. Most of the audience seemed like we were all around Robin's age so we are all on a similar journey in terms of aging.
Most of the material in this show isn't about the wild and whacky early days of youth where you act crazy because you believe you are indestructable. Rather the material comes from someone who has been through that stage and lived to tell about it and recognizes his own mortality and all that goes along with the natural aging process.
Maybe that doesn't sound like funny stuff -- but Robin Williams makes it funny and allows you to laugh at yourself and the aging process which is a relief. It is sort of like -- you can either whine and moan about getting older or your can laugh at yourself. I know I would much rather laugh and revel in the shared experience that all of us boomers are going through.
Other themes that he touches on are the economy (again, making you laugh at the absurdity that got us here just as Jon Stewart of the Daily Show makes you laugh), some politics, and just generally absurd tangents in a way that is Trademark Robin Williams...
If you have followed Robin Williams career from the days of Mork (which means you are old enough to have aged with him and lived through the decades with him), then I think you will enjoy this DVD. If you are expecting his previous style of "free association" comedy that you might have seen snippets of but where you don't know the "history", then you may be disappointed (as the first reviewer obviously was).
Great artists evolve. Robin Williams has evolved but he has definitely aged well and if you want a chance to laugh at yourself and the aging process -- you will find yourself worn out with laughter after viewing this DVD.
As I said, I was almost too depressed to even go to this show. However, after I left, I felt so much better because I had laughed so long and so hard. Laughter truly is the best medicine and Robin Williams is the best "practitioner" of this medicine in my humble opinion!!

Flying Saucer Tour, Vol. 1 Review

(More customer reviews)This is everything a Bill Hicks album should be. It's not scattered or all over the place, it is a complete set in its entirety. (With the exception of the last bit, which was replaced with another one due to the tape running out. That is explained in the booklet.) "Flying Saucer Tour Vol. 1" is an outstanding Bill Hicks album with great material.
Hicks wasn't your ordinary comedian. He didn't do the whole "family" bit or "relationship" bit. No, he tackled edgy and controversial topics without any fear. It's subtle, and yet very refreshing and original. His comedy and sense of humor is dark and sarcastic, but it's all executed perfectly. Bill Hicks was a great talent to admire. There was no end to his brilliant mind.
"Flying Saucer Tour Vol. 1" took place in Pittsburg, PA on June 20th, 1991. He talks about drugs, the gulf war, President Bush (not G.W.), smoking, working, the news, the media, and much more.
The great thing about this album is you get to hear the whole act, with the exception of the end. You get to hear the man every step of the way, and see just how cool and calm he can be when the audience doesn't appear to "get him" in the beginning. You get to experience him gradually winning the crowd over as the time goes by without breaking a sweat. The best is when he actually interacts a bit with the crowd when he feels that they're not laughing like they should be. It's really a great thing to hear.
Although the whole album is great, my favorite tracks are "the f-word," "smoking," "trying to quit," "are you guys drug dealers?," "school days," "Beelzebozo," and "great times on drugs." All of the "vs. the audience" tracks are also hilarious.
It sounds like there will be more of these types of albums coming out. I think it's a lot better when we get to hear Bill's material in its entirety without it being out of order or all over the place. If you love Bill Hicks, pick this album up right now. Stop reading the review! Go out and buy this right now. You will not regret it. "Flying Saucer Tour Vol. 1" is everything a Bill Hicks album should be, and more.
Bill Hicks: the comedian, the philosopher, the great. Not to forget very much missed.
