Having heard so much about Lenny's live performances, I was eager to purchase this "concert" disc. When I got my "special edition" version yesterday, I checked out the set list, popped it in the DVD, turned it up, waited for the concert to begin...and immediately became frustrated with what I saw.
Instead of pure concert material, Director Mark Seliger uses the "MTV" approach of capturing Lenny "Live": the focus is as much on his off-stage persona as it is on the live performance material. The editing chops up the live concert material with the documentary approach that I wasn't expecting. Frankly, I wouldn't mind seeing that side of him, but as a seperate piece of footage: let the concert stuff stand alone, unbroken!
So, if you're expecting a start-to-finish Lenny Kravitz performance like I was, you'll be disappointed. The song list is good: Bank Robber Man, Rock and Roll is Dead, American Woman, Stillness of Heart, If I could Fall in Love, Pay to Play, Again, Dig In, Are You Gonna Go My Way, Believe, Beyond The 7th Sky, Let Love Rule, Fly Away and a video clip of Yesterday is Gone.
I just wish it really was "Lenny Kravitz in Concert", not "The Life of Lenny".
