This is quintessential Golden Age Wagner. Lauritz Melchior was the greatest heldentenor of all time. He's partnered by Lotte Lehmann, another superstar from that era. This is a rare opportunity to hear Marjorie Lawrence, perhaps nearly as important a Brunnhilde as Flagstad. Friedrich Schorr and Kirsten Thorborg round out the Met's first magnitude Wagnerians of the WW II era. Leinsdorf was a fiery conductor and drives the drama along at an exciting, brisk pace.
There is another live Met broadcast from a few weeks earlier with Lawrence as Sieglinde and Flagstad as Brunnhilde, an extremely rare performance, and like this one, one of the most important documents of Wagner singing at its best. I recommend them both if you want to hear epic ensembles of legendary Wagner performances, but you'll have to put up with a fair amount of the predictable sound of radio broadcasts from that era.
