Faye Wong Hong Kong Scenic Tour 1998-99 2-CD collection is a live recording that features 32 of Faye's best songs. It is a memoir of her career as an artist since 1989 up to present. The change of music label in 1997 from Cinepoly Hong Kong (subsidiary of Universal) to EMI allows her to bloom and break through the usual Hong Kong mainstream music style. Faye Wong is now internationally known as the Queen of Asian Pop.
Faye Wong, whose esoteric and catchy performance in Wong Ka Wai's "Chungking Express" has captured praises and attention. The 1995 release "Di-Dar" sold almost 1 million in Asian and had remained one of the hall-of-fame albums in Hong Kong music industry. Coupling up with the Cocteau Twins in 1996, the Mandarin release "Hot and Dry" set the debut of Chinese alternative music.
Upon the change of music label in 1997, the EMI debut "Wang Fei-Faye Wong" sold over 1 million in Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. The No. 1 hits "You're Happy (So I'm Happy)", "I Don't Want To Be This Way", and "Boring" topped all music charts in Chinese communities worldwide. Faye also performed a rendition of Cocteau Twins' "Rilkean Heart". The 1998 release "Cheung Yau-Travel" remained on IFPI sales chart for almost 20 weeks. No. 1 hits "Red Bean" and "Love Commandments" topped all charts and stayed for almost 40 weeks. The 1999 release of "Eyes on Me", ending theme for Final Fantasy 8 introduced Faye Wong to fans even in non-Asian countries.
Faye Wong had only done 2 tours in her 12-year career. This CD collection witnesses the glory of her career. You will find her best works from both music labels and get to appreciate her soft but high-pitched voice in this live recording.
I do want to point out that this album is imported from Japan by EMI (Japan) Ltd. The songs are all in either Cantonese or Mandarin. The Amazon track listing is incorrect that these songs are Japanese titles.
Highly recommended.
