Before he became such an inovator, an avant-guardish player, Albert Mangelsdorff was obviously more than competent cool-jazz player, with great melodic imagination, with only a slightly rougher edge to his sound than was usual for the West Coast school of jazz...
I've first heard him in an 70's performance with Zagreb based B. P. Convention Big Band, together with Clark Terry, Art Farmer, Ernie Wilkinson, Gianni Basso and other international jazz stars, so I wanted to hear more from him, but this is something else, more mainstream performance (although pleasing as well). Later on this great German player will meet Orient and develop his unique style.
His co-stars on this CD are Bud Shank and Bob Cooper, two very fine sax-players from the west coast, the first one also playing the flute, the second one playing oboe, so, with support from other more than competent players, this CD is quite recommendable to all west-coast fans and to those who never get tired of hearing new explorations of jazz standards ("These Foolish Things", "Night in Tunisia", "Angel Eyes", "Tea for Two", "I'll Remember April"...) .

The release begins with a concert recorded by the sextet in Hamburg on April 12, 1957. The horn solos are excellent, and Mangelsdorff proves a more than capable frontline partner for his American collaborators, displaying his virtuosic technique, energetic style and gift for melodic invention on each solo.
