Let me preface this review by saying that if you are unfamliar with Pedro the Lion's work up to this point, this is not the album you will want to introduce yourself to their work with. This a "live in the studio" release consisting of new versions of previously released material and covers of other people's songs. First timers should consider the albums "Control" or "Achilles Heel." That being said, long-time fans of Pedro will enjoy this EP. It shows once again that they are a strong live act who aren't afraid to tweak the old material a bit. For example, Bazaan and company change the keys of "Transcontinental" and "Slow and Steady..." to mixed results. The choice is esspecially effective on the latter, as the change allows Bazaan to sing the second verse in a soaring manner that will surprise and delight fans of the original recording. This version of "Slow and Steady..." also features the entire band, giving it a much different dynamic than the version on "Winners Never Quit."
The covers are fairly faithful renditions. The biting satire of Randy Newman's "Political Science" comes through in Bazaan's voice and leaves the listener with a smile. The group's version of "Let Down" isn't nearly as grandiose Radiohead's, but what it lacks in scope it makes up for in pure, heartfelt emotion. Fans of both Radiohead and Pedro will probably be divided over it, but it is actually quite strong.
Overall, this is another strong release by the group. The only place it loses points with me is with its lack of any vocal harmonies from the original recordings, but maybe that's just personal preference. One should note that this will be David Bazaan's last recording as Pedro the Lion and that he will be continuing from here under his own name.
