Crowded House: Farewell to the World Live (2007) Review

Recorded in 1996 at the Sydney Opera House plaza, "Crowded House" plays their farewell concert to an appreciative crowd of over 120,000. The 24-song set contains amazingly pure and tight sound with Neil Finn's voice at its best. There are no stand-out cuts, as the band gives it best performance to date on every track. It is flawless. The comments from the band to the audience between songs makes this one of the most personable concerts ever recorded. Slight variations on some songs and an accent here and there make the fans sing along throughout. The closing song, "Don't Dream its Over" is as emotional as ever, with shots of the crowd signing along and the band emoting, realizing this really is their last song together. It's one of the best concerts of the last two decades.
The extras include an optional commentary by the band in subtitles. The second disc has a 20-minute documentary about the enormous planning it took to stage this event, mostly narrated by the band's manager. Also included are a few featurettes, a photo gallery and the full "Crowded House" discography. This is one of those collectable packages that you'll never tire of.

High Civilization Review

The music of the Bee Gees has played a tremendous role in my life. From the day I heard 'New York Mining Disaster'in 1967, they have been and always will be my favorite band. High Civilization in my opinion, is the most perfect album they have done since the also overlooked Mr. Natural in 1974, thru the present. I listened to it every day for over a year. Every one of my friends and their kids who heard this CD bought it.
I was so amused when everybody said "That's the Bee Gees?!"
It opened some minds and ears for the first time to this marvelous group.
As for the best cuts, I say all of the above--pick any one and there will be no argument from me. I will say that 'Dimensions' is my all time favorite Maurice song. How sad it is that there will be no more new Bee Gees music. It makes me treasure their vast body of work even more.
While I'm on the subject, I think I'll give HC a listen now-- and I hope more Bee Gees fans will do the same.

I edited this concert DVD for the Newsboys. I spent around 300 hours selecting shots and finessing edits. I LOVE IT! I have watched it from start to finish more times then I can remember and it still excites me and touches my spirit. It is a wonderfully entertaining and engaging PARTY!
PS Other than the company I work for being hired to produce this video, I am not connected to the Newsboys. I get nothing for writing this review. I did get to meet Peter Furler and he is very genuine. Buy this DVD/CD and you will be so glad you did.
*While Phil Joel is definitely missed, this is still a wonderful concert. Phil is such an iconic member of the Newsboys history. I am sure that he is a very difficult person to replace. I personally think that Paul Colman is a wonderful addition. No, he isn't SRV, but he is a very competent guitar player and adds very good vocals. While there is some overdubbing going on, it was done to enhance the quality of the performance. The majority of what you hear is a live performance. All of the different vocals and instruments were captured separately so that they could perform the kind of mix and EQ work that just can't be done live. Just like the shooting of the video. We captured all of the cameras separately and chose which ones would be viewed after the fact.

Albertine Review

Albertine

Really, no words can describe the unique beauty of Brooke Fraser's music. It's melodic, poetic, socially/spiritually aware, some of the best songwriting out there right now. Once you have heard the CD "Albertine," you will never forget it. If you can't sample the songs here, you can listen to the songs on MySpace (.../brookefraser).
The New Zealand singer-songwriter has a multi-dimensional voice. Her voice is lilting, a confident soprano, marked with an emotional, sometimes desperate, alto. Her voice is rich and resonating, makes your heart stop a bit. It's pure, raw talent. Brooke's therefore at her best in the spiritually-themed tracks like "Faithful" and "Hymn" where it's just her and a piano.
The rest of the CD -- a mixture of pop/rock/folk/alternative (it's hard to label it all really) -- goes way beyond what you'd expect from a 25-year-old artist. She addresses the theme of generations in "Seeds":
"Child, what will you live to do? What have I left for you? What will we leave behind?"
The CD's title track, "Albertine" is a tribute to lives lost in the Rwandan genocide and a call to arms to look beyond ourselves, to help those in need.
"C.S. Lewis Song" starts off simple with vocals and a piano then gradually builds in complexity to a driving, rock alternative track that then fades into song #7, an unnamed rock music interlude with guitarist Michael Chaves. (Chaves, one of the most sought-after guitarists by recording artists, played/toured with John Mayer.)
There are of course, the songs about love, but the ones here go far beyond the average FM radio ditty: There's the universally appealing "Shadowfeet" and "Deciphering Me," and the almost tribal, certainly unique, "Love, Where is Your Fire?" (You just have to hear it to see what I mean -- sample her songs on MySpace!).
Already a platinum-selling artist in her native New Zealand, the "Albertine" CD was released in the U.S. in May. The CD is produced by Marshall Altman, the famed Los Angeles producer behind Kate Voegele's hit CD. Brooke is currently touring with the Hotel Cafe Tour with Anya Marina, Meiko, and Priscilla Ahn. Brooke has previously written/recorded songs for Hillsong United, a Christian organization.
Though there is religious influence in some of "Albertine"'s songs, the CD is far from being preachy. If you're looking for Christian music specifically, check out Brooke in Hillsong's CDs like "All of the Above" and the "I Heart One Revolution" also available on Amazon.

24 year old Brooke Fraser is a pop phenomenon in New Zealand and Australia, where sales of her new album Albertine and debut What To Do With Daylight have together sold over 225,000 units. Brooke recorded Albertine in Hollywood with renowned producer Marshall Altman (Train, Marc Broussard & Matt Nathanson) andis now ready to conquer the rest of the world. Brooke is a member of the Hillsong United Church for which she has written two wildly popular and best selling hymns. Her performance of one of those hymns, Hosanna has had over 1,400,000 views on Youtube. Her solo album songs appeal just as much to fans of mainstream artists like Sarah McLachlan, Ingrid Michaelson and KT Tunstall. To date she has over 3 million plays on her Youtube channel, over 730,000 plays and 30,000 friends on her Myspace page. A national club tour and major festivals will start on the album release at the end of May.

When I heard 'Something in the Water' I was completely surprised. This can't be Brooke Fraser? When did she go country? Well, she never did if you listen to the rest of the album. The first single off the album is a delightfully toe-tapping folk alt-country song, which is hard to dislike. It also happens to be right in the realm of what's popular right now. Taylor Swift, Mumford & Sons, Angus and Julia Stone - they're all taking bits of country and making it cool. So I was super pleased as I'm personally a huge fan.
Unfortunately, at first listen, the rest of the album only samples the style Something in the Water offers. 'Betty', co-written with Switchfoot's Jon Foreman, is a good track but is a bit of a letdown after the opener. Moving on quickly to the next, 'Orphans, Kingdoms', is back to the Brooke Fraser we know. And she does it very, very well. It's a stunning track and is one of the tracks that wonderfully tie in her original style with a new sampling of folk. It is my standout from the whole album. I can't really get past the lyrics "we are wandering where the wild wind blows, we are happy here 'cause the wild wind knows what we are...orphans, kingdoms." Best track.
'Who Are We Fooling?' is the fourth track co-written with Matt Hales aka Aqualung who also appears with Brooke in a duet. It is a beautiful, heart-breaking song and when I put this CD in my car on the way home from buying it, it was the first track I couldn't skip over from. It started playing and I couldn't stop listening. The harmonies are breathtaking. Their voices blend in so well together.
The next track is one I just can't get into. Even after multiple listens to this album, 'Ice On Her Lashes', is simply not a favourite. It starts off so slow and never really gets anywhere. Of course Brooke's vocals is magnificent anyway, but it's just a skippable one for me. 'Coachella' is a great song, one I can see getting lots of radio-play and lots of people getting sick of hearing it. I would be a good follow-up single to Something in the Water.
'Jack Kerouac' is the first track after the lead single to really show a different side to Brooke. It's a bouncy song with hints of reggae, I could imagine it being played on a beach somewhere in the middle of summer. I get this vision of a music video in California with lots of people dancing around on the beach with a fire at dusk, and then at the end someone drives off into the sunset. Or maybe that's just me?
'Sailboats' takes us back to classic Brooke Fraser. This could have easily appeared on her debut album. It's as beautiful as ever. Moving on to 'Crows + Locusts' which is a bit of a masterpiece. It's a storytelling song, which immediately reminded me of the style of Johnny Cash in both musical sound and lyrical approach. It's a long track, but definitely worth listening to. It tells the story of a woman in the midst of losing her farm to the earthly elements and the song comes to end as she breaks down but still holds her hope knowing that she still has her faith in the Lord.
The second last song seems to be a bit of a drinking ditty, which is something rather unexpected. It's one the few that has a slight folk country vibe, and it's a great song. It's a simple tune and very likable. You'll start a singalong without even realising. The final track is the title 'Flags' and it's a powerful way to end the album. Meaningful, breathtaking and classic Brooke Fraser.
Overall, Flags is a fantastic album. It's not what I was expecting from the first single but that doesn't make it any less of a great album.
Standout tracks are: Something in the Water; Orphans, Kingdoms; Who Are We Fooling? and Crows + Locusts. I'm really giving it 4.5 stars, and Amazon should employ a half-stars system...

Flags is a dreamy, alternative-pop collection that showcases her agile soprano, lilting melodies, and knack for telling her stories through the lives of vibrant characters on songs like ''Betty'' (co-written with Switchfoot's Jon Foreman and Ben West of Detroit indie duo The Real Efforts of Real People), ''Crows and Locusts,'' '' Jack Kerouac,'' and ''Ice on Her Lashes.'' ''I've never used as many characters or as much narrative in my songwriting as I have on this record,'' Fraser says. ''On my previous albums [2003's What To Do With Daylight and 2008's Albertine], I was singing completely as myself, which is why I think I got so burnt out from touring. Albertine was inspired by incredibly significant events and people and every time I'd sing I'd go back to that moment where my heart was ripped open. So singing such heavy songs nearly every night for three years took a toll. On Flags, it's still me speaking, but it's me speaking through the voices of different characters and their stories. It's more survivable.'' The album also features a co-written duet with Aqualung's Matt Hales, titled ''Who Are We Fooling?''.

Flight of the Conchords is hands down the funniest show on TV this summer, but Bret and Jemaine are also known for their wickedly funny live shows. This little EP showcases both their in-studio and live performances and provides a nice little taste of the full album to come in early 2008. I can't wait!

First up, I'd suggest listening to the samples provided here to see if this terrific Crowded House album is going to be for you. It doesn't sound like anything Neil's done with the band before (although it does recall "Temple of Low Men" and "Together Alone" in terms of its mood). Fans will love this album which builds subtly, over many listens. It is worming its way into my list top albums for this year. Neil is reflective on the changes in his life. Some of the tunes on here are some of the most catchy of his career. He also co-writes a tune with former Smith Johnny Marr (the chiming "Even a Child")and one with The Dixie Chicks. Neil continues to be one of the finest songwriters of his generation and he won't let down fans with this release either.
One thing that Neil Finn never does is make the same album twice. Crowded House fans will find that "Time on Earth" grows on you and isn't as instantly memorable as "Woodface" but is equally as powerful and memorable. In fact, this album reminds me more of the follow up to the band's popular "Woodface" album, "Together Alone"; the melodies are touched with melancholy. You can't help but feel that the death of Paul Hester (the band's original drummer, occasional songwriter and friend of Neil's since the end of Split Enz), middle age and changes in Neil's personal life informed this terrific album. As always, Neil demonstrates a knack for writing memorable melodies and thoughtful, deeply felt lyrics that rank among the best out there. Neil's more experimental solo albums have also impacted this album as well (they departed from the "formula" of Crowded House)and since this was, initially, going to be a solo album it's not a surprise that this album's low key charm and musically adventurous touches are in line with what was on Neil's most recent pair of solo recordings.
Nevertheless, this IS a Crowded House album and brims with all the wit, songwriting skill and hooks that Neil and his band are known for. In fact one of the most interesting aspects of this album is the collison between the "style" that Neil established on his solo albums, the pair he made with his brother Tim and the Crowded House sound. It reinvigorates the album making it a unique and enjoyable follow up to "Together Alone" (the band's last full studio album. I'm not counting "Afterglow" since it was made up of b-sides and tracks that weren't used for the original version of "Woodface").
For those interested there is an import with a DVD of live performances. Also, the first single has two songs not included here plus some live tracks as well. Unfortunately the deluxe edition with the DVD hasn't been released in the United States as of this date.
Worth picking up.
