They said it would never happen, they said fat chance trying to get Dave Mustaine and James and Kirk to share a stage together. Guess what? Its real! Seeing how timeless the Big 4 are and how they still rule to this day, this is historic on so many levels.
Every band brought their A game to this, Anthrax starts off and Joey couldn't sound any better. During Indians in mid song he just breaks into a mini Ronnie James Dio tribute with the song Heaven and Hell. Completely unexpected! Very cool, Joey is a character running around in Chief Indian hat lol
Megadeth my favorite of them all starts off with the classic Holy Wars, and as soon as they begin it starts to rain, this just adds to the performance making it intense, Hangar 18 had the whole crowd going crazy! I'm very happy that they did A Tout Le Monde, the whole crowd sang along word by word. In Short, Megadeth killed it!
Slayer is next my second favorite, they never dissapoint Kerry King is flawless, Hank as well, Daves drumming is like thunder especially Disciple! Toms voice is good but sometimes not clear, because of all the mayhem going on
And then we have Metallica. Ok well they had the longest set of all 4, about 2 hours, every body else got 1 hour, Metallica also had a huge screen in the background for close ups of the band, no one else had that.
Yeah big deal right?
There are many highlights in this show, including all 4 bands playing Diamond Head's Am I Evil???? Which was epic only Tom did not sing. It was great seeing James sing then Joey then Dave, 16 people on stage killing it!!!! During Slayers performance Tom thanks the crowd in Hungarian which was cool.
Many more highlights and funny stuff in the documentary. Watch it very good stuff
Not once was I bored during this 5 hour spectacular, I just wish it could have been more unheard or barely played songs not just hits, I mean who wants to hear Fuel and Sad But True anyway????
I can't believe Megadeth didn't play Killing is My Business! That was the perfect venue for it! Oh well, also I really wished they would play The Skull Beneath the Skin ( my fav Megadeth song ) that song never gets played live. Also Slayer wasn't as explosive as before but that's due to Toms back problems he can't whip his head around like crazy anymore, he didn't even try to whip it, and I don't blame him.
This dvd is officially out today Nov 2 but if you were smart and preordered it like me, then you got early access! Yes the box set is the ultimate....

So there you have it, The Big 4 is here, so forget about voting and go get this dvd box set you will not regret it! 1 more thing there are rumors going around that the Big 4 will tour select cities in the U.S. next year!!!! Keep your fingers crossed

All music and video footage was recorded on June 22, 2010 during one of the seven Big 4 tour stops featuring Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. When the 'Big Four,' Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax shared a stage together on June 22nd, 2010, in Sofia, Bulgaria, it was the moment their fans had waited decades for. That monumental show was beamed live into over 1000 theaters worldwide via satellite in a special HD cinematic event. On November 2nd, 2010, this legendary concert will be available on DVD and Blu-ray through Warner Bros. Records. These four acts broke out of the underground thrash movement in the 1980's to dominate the metal world, selling millions of records and packing arenas across the globe. Despite huge demand, these musical giants had never shared the same stage. The legendary June 22nd, 2010, concert from the tour's stop of the Sonisphere Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria aired the same day in 79 movie theaters in the U.K, over 450 theaters in over 140 markets in the US, as well as being beamed into theaters in Europe, Canada, Latin America, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. In December 2009, the bands announced that they would be joining forces to take part in the traveling Sonisphere Festival for only 7 shows across Europe. This one-time only event, from the Sofia show, made it possible for fans far and wide to participate in what otherwise was a very limited run of dates. Lars Ulrich of Metallica says of this historic show, 'Who would have thought that more than 25 years after its inception, thrash metal's Big Four would not only still be around, be more popular than ever, playing shows together at stadiums all over Europe, and on top of that, coming to a movie theater near you in High Definition (for better or worse??!!). Bring it on!' Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian says, 'Damn, as if this Big 4 tour wasn't exciting enough, now we get to be on the big screen worldwide! Metal at the movies, two big horns up! It is unbelievably gratifying that this means so much to the metal community around the globe. Get your tix, grab some popcorn and get ready to bang your head!' Declares Slayer's Kerry King, 'I can't believe someone didn't make this happen 15 years ago! The fans finally get what they want. I think it's awesome!' Says Megadeth's Dave Mustaine, 'The magnitude of this event hasn't really sunk in yet, and I am thrilled to know that people around the planet will be able to walk into a movie theatre and experience the greatest line up of Heavy Metal in the history of the world!'

Simply put, this is the best box set I've ever owned. Granted, I'm a huge Metallica fan and I'm probably inclined to fall in love with anything they release. But Metallica rips it live, and this box set showcases over eight hours of that. On both the CDs and DVDs (a Mexico City show on the CDs, and full Seattle and San Diego shows on the DVDs), you hear a completely different side of the band. While their studio recordings are tight and emotional, their live set conveys the sense that Metallica have fun when they play live. There is a certain leaning toward improvisation that makes listening to these tracks a blast.
The sound quality isn't as good as on S&M, probably because these shows were recorded in the early nineties, and the high-budget production of that era falls short of what you can expect of live recordings from the past few years. But it's still great to listen to a different interpretation of their songs. When they play live, their tunes sound different than their studio counterparts, but this is actually a positive thing; there are certain moments when they let things hang, and then pummel the tension whenever they feel like it, which gives the sets kind of a jammy feel. Hetfield's comments to the crowd are left in, which was the only dissapointing thing about S&M; it's great to hear James interact with the crowd. As he pumps them up, you feel energized as well.
The show from the Black Album tour is impressive, but the direction is somewhat choppy. The ...And Justice For All show is directed brilliantly, and their set comes across as very epic and powerful.
Like I said, best box set I've ever owned. And it's loads cheaper than the VHS version, so I'd recommend this to any hardcore Metallica fan, or anyone who loves hearing quality live albums.

Convenient new size...Still f***ing huge! Metallica's Live Sh*t: Binge & Purge - the unprecendented box set featuring three complete concerts on three CD's and three VHS tapes, more than eight hours of live Metallica - is now being made available on three CD's and two DVD's at a special price. This colossal box has sold an incredible 613,000 copies since its 1993 release, and this reissue is sure to swell the ranks of those blown away by these shows. Nothing gets left behind -- the complete original 72-page full-color book is even included on DVD 2, and the commemorative backstage pass and scary guy stencil are enclosed as well. It's a one-two-three punch unmatched by any band, before or since, and the perfect gift for that special someone who needs their ass kicked hard by the world's greatest rock & roll band.--This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

Motorizer Review

Lemmy must have been into heavy doses of the Ramones while recording this album, because his love for the band is quite evident throughout "Motorizer". In fact there is a fast paced, "punk" rock vibe to many of the songs here in the "Goin' To Brazil" & "R.A.M.O.N.E.S" vein. "Rock Out" does exactly what it promises and then some. Mickey Dee's drumming propels the album from start to finish without pause (no slowed down ballads here). Dee is arguably the best drummer in rock/metal and he proves it here. And friggin' Phil, the man never ceases to amaze me; his playing just keeps getting better. Phil takes his own chops, blends in a wee-wee bit of Chuck Berry, a heavy dose of Thin Lizzy era Brian Robertson (Phil's wah wah pedal tone is killer on this album) and consequently churns out guitar solos and fills that are short, sweet and very wicked. Then you have Lemmy.....'nuff said. I am a longtime fan dating back to the vinyl days. I would hesitate to put "Motorizer" up there with classics like "Overkill" and "Ace Of Spades", but it is darn close.
A great place to start for a newcomer to the band and a definite "add to cart" for current Motorhead fans.

True pop culture icons. Unquestioned household name recognition. Purveyors of some of the finest hard rock and heavy metal on the planet. This is Motörhead! Motörizer is Motörhead s 24th album and gives listeners the feeling that they have not yet reached the peak of their musical output. Like the band themselves have stated: A kick ass motherf#cking record definitely one of the wider ranged Motörhead records ever released . The album was produced by Cameron Webb and the recording took place at Sage & Sound and Foo Fighter Dave Grohl s 606 studios in Los Angeles. Motörhead is embarking on a full-scale US tour together with Heaven & Hell and Judas Priest, already being hailed as the tour of the year`.

Death Magnetic Review

Death Magnetic

Many Metallica fans have thought of them as sellouts ever since they released their first music video to "One" back in 1989. After they enlisted producer Bob Rock for "The Black" album, Metallica became "radio friendly" with many songs coming in at around five minutes or less. Load and Reload did little to reverse this, and St. Anger was easily the worst CD that Metallica ever released. So it is with good reason that many have been sceptical about what to expect from Metallica's latest offering Death Magnetic.
Some significant things have changed since St. Anger. This is the first release from Metallica on their new record label, Warner Bros. Many will cheer that producer Bob Rock is also gone having been replaced by renowned career resurrector Rick Rubin. All of this is somewhat academic, though, unless the music also changed as a result.
I'm pleased to report that Death Magnetic is somewhat of a Renaissance for Metallica. While it will not be mistaken for what many consider to be the best trio of metal CDs made (Ride The Lightening, Master Of Puppets, and ...And Justice For All), it is a marked improvement over what Metallica has had to offer over the past 15 years. Much of what you will hear falls somewhere between Justice and The Black Album.
Right out of the gate on "That Was Just Your Life" many of the signs of old school Metallica are on display. This song starts with a simple, bare, and undistorted guitar line, but it builds to full on thrash as we see that Lars Ulrich has remembered what drums on a Metallica album are supposed to sound like. Before the first verse starts, James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett remind us what the dual guitar lines can sound like. And yes, Kirk Hammett's soloing is also back, and he does not disappoint. The next two tracks continue to crunch along, but some will lose heart when "The Day That Never Comes" come up. However, it manages to finish much stronger than it starts. As if sensing that they needed to dial it back up, "All Nightmare Long" returns to full on shredding and goes from there. The combined guitar lines and drum line create a tempo that feels like it could match the speed of helicopter blades. This song also finds Metallica on the familiar theme of mental stability heard on "Welcome Home Sanitarium" and "The Frayed Ends Of Sanity" from days of old.
When I looked at the track listing before hearing any of the songs, I had concern when I saw "The Unforgiven III". My first thought was, "Do we really need another rehash of the radio hit 'Unforgiven'?" However listening to the song showed me that my concern was in vane. While "The Unforgiven" and "The Unforgiven II" are fairly straightforward, "The Unforgiven III" is more metaphoric as it relates life's torment to sea adventures in search of gold gone awry. The lyrics actually don't include the word "unforgiven" making the title choice a bit puzzling, but I think that "The Unforgiven III" is better than either of its namesakes.
All in all, Death Magnetic is solid heavy metal CD, but I expect reaction to it to be very mixed. The part of the Metallica fan base who will enjoy this the most are those who liked ...And Justice For All and The Black Album. They don't reach far enough back for the oldest of old school fans while those looking for Load or Reload will also likely be disappointed. Hopefully having a better idea of where this fits in the Metallica spectrum will help you decide if it is for you or not.

This is an interesting show. This is right in the thick of the "Load" tour when Metallica were trying something different.
So What sounds pretty damn good and it's a good way to open the show. Right from that into Creeping Death which always sounds cool live. Then the boys go into the worst version of Sad But True they've probably ever done. I always skip this because it's just...eww. Ain't My Bitch sounds good live however, as do Hero of the Day and King Nothing. Then they go into a pretty bad version of One where Kirk misses the start of his solo and James sounds...not very good. Then, a nice little version of Fuel w/ alternate lyrics and as always, Fuel smokes live. Then a bass/guitar doodle of My Friend of Misery and Sanitarium into a very good version of Nothing Else Matters. Then Until It Sleeps comes in which I'm not a fan of personally, but it sounds good live. Then good ol' Bellz kicks in and gets the place jumpin'. Great live song and huge crowd pleaser every time. Then, Wherever I May Roam which is good live, but I'm glad it's not a staple anymore. Then...Fade to Black. A GREAT version of Fade to Black at that. Everybody nails their parts perfectly and the mood that is set is just awesome. Then they play the Kill/Ride medley, which consists of parts of Ride the Lightning, No Remorse, Hit the Lights, The Four Horsemen, Seek and Destroy, and Fight Fire w/ Fire. Then for the encore they come out with Last Caress into the first part of Master of Puppets, cutting out before the interlude, then segwaying into Enter Sandman. At the end of Sandman is where the "stunts" come in. Lots of pyro, explosions, lights cutting out, emergency workers w/ flashlights, and a guy on fire running across the stage. Once all that's done, the PA system has actually collapsed so it looks like a little garage, which is lit by dozens of hanging light bulbs. The last two songs for the night are Am I Evil? and a badly edited version of Motorbreath where Kirk is clearly using two different guitars. Overall, it's all right. Get S&M before you get this, or better yet, go see Metallica for yourself.

Its difficult to describe what Rodrigo y Gabriela can do with a pair of guitars, the best thing to do is to click on the crocodile's eye at http://www.rodgab.com to see for yourself.
Don't think that this is flowery, fluffy flamenco guitar music, its not. If you like rock, you'll love this. The opening two tracks ("Tamacun" and "Diablo Rojo") are the highlights in an album of standout tracks. Tremendous. ray

The sleeve photo of a crocodile's eye with a faint image of Rodrigo and Gabriela superimposed, suits the artists' desire for something which didn't shout "Mexican guitarists" or "Couples." "It reminded us of Tamacun, the famous Mexican eccentric who is in Ixtapa where we lived for a while".Tamacun -"Tamacun's message is to teach kids to respect nature." He handlescrocodiles, and tourists come to photograph him.Diablo Rojo - Inspired by a wild rollercoaster called 'Red Devil' at atheme park in Copenhagen, Denmark. Three rides in a row, each. Viking Man - Another Danish inspired piece. The Viking Man was a homelessguy who encouraged Rod & Gab to tough it out on the streets, busking inminus zero conditions at Christmastime. John Leckie adds radio static.Satori - Experiencing self doubt shortly after arriving in Ireland, Rodrigoy Gabriela were at a low ebb. No money, poor English and a deep sense ofuncertainty. Only an unshakeable faith in perseverance kept them going.Satori describes the Zen - like moment of enlightenment they felt when theycame through the storm. Ixtapa - "Ixtapa is a very beautiful, very Mexican town." Roby Lakatos'wildly soaring violin solo is a perfect counterpoint to the melodic andpercussive guitars. Stairway to Heaven - "Ixtapa was our very own Stairway to Heaven!" Rod &Gab's take was initially inspired by Stanley Jordan's interpretation of theLed Zep warhorse. Growing from snippets in their live show, their uniqueversion is at once both respectful and innovative. Orion - This epic reworking of the Metallica song is the second timeRodrigo y Gabriela have covered Messrs Hetfield, Ulrich & Co: "A tribute tothe style of music we love, it's what kept us playing the guitar throughall those Spinal Tap years"Juan Loco - The first attempt at recording this album in Mexico in Summer2005 resulted in three weeks of sunbathing, beer drinking and power cuts.Enter Mr John Leckie, legendary producer of Radiohead, The Stone Roses andMuse, to name but a few; to midwife Rod & Gab's musical vision into whatyou hear today. 'Juan Loco' ('Mad John') is their Mexican nickname for MrLeckie. PPA - "The first P of PPA stands for Pinche, a Mexican term meaning f**kingasshole. I was never a big fan of Anthrax, mostly because I never really listened to them back then but this performance has made me want to go back and take a better listen.
Anthrax:
In my opinion, Anthrax steals the show that night from watching this DVD. It's supposed to be a celebration of "The Big Four" but it left me wanting to watch more Anthrax. Mainly because they sound incredible and you know for a fact your getting the live feed without any trickery. Everything sounded like you were sitting right in front as it should. All the guys are having a blast and are on top of their game. What a shame they didn't get more time and at night but this is good enough because they schooled everyone else. Every song sounded great and it was a good even surprising mix of what I apparently never heard with the exception of I am the Law, Indians etc.. It was a good sounded diverse set with a hint of Punk from the bass player and a nice thoughtful and brilliantly played Heaven An Hell. I've watched their performance 4 times now and still love it.
Megadeth:
My favorite band out of the four put on a brilliantly played musical set. You can instantly tell from the Anthrax performance and sound quality that Megadeth had a totally different sound going on. More "tinny" Musically and sonically it sounded GREAT but Dave Mustains vocals RUINED the performance. I have seen a lot of Megadeth performances and he usually can pull it off.. sometimes he sounds great, sometimes not but this performance was AWFUL. He usually overdubs the official releases but apparently he didn't have much control over this one. I've read others who say the overdubs suck but unfortunate this is an overdub issue.. This is a vocal issue with Dave.
He needs to seek medical attention or do different songs because this falsetto he's doing sounds silly and embarrassing to sit here and watch it. He seems to really struggle with the higher register.. almost as if he's lost the back of his vocal chords.. I think the rain during their set was a message to the band to get Dave some help or hang it up. Watch it once and it's so embarrassing to see much less hear you will shrink back into your couch. the boys in the back must have been like wtf???
Slayer:
Couldn't hear them.. too damn muddy and the guitars are WAY in the back of the mix.. maybe these guys should get some better gear so we can really hear them? but they looked cool...
Metallica:
Same ole... What are you going to say? It sounded good but I heard Lars screw up a couple times but no biggie..It was Metallica and it's the same songs we've heard over and over..
So in the end I have to say it's worth it from a historical perspective and the added bonus of Anthrax schooling all the pro's that night.. well done

All I can say is wow! I bought this on VHS when it first came out so glad its finally on DVD. out of all the live videos and dvd's that i have in my collection none of them are as clear or nicely produced as Anthrax's N.F.V.the sound quality is amazing and really has been a basis for comparison for me ever since it came out. Heavy as Hell, tight, and just amazing. This version of Medusa totally blew me away. I've seen Anthrax live probably about 3 times over the years and I will say this: This video actually captures the the power and intesity of the actual performance. Put it in crank the surround sound sit back and see them just like you were back in 1987.

This is a review for the blu-ray 2 disc set. On the first disc you get Anthrax, followed by Megadeth and then Slayer's set. On the second disc you get the Metallica set and the bonus features. I will break down the setlists at the bottom of the review.
First the sound is amazing in my opinion, as is the picture. I thought the overall mix on all four sets was really good. I've read the one review about Mustaine's vocals, I didn't notice it, so can't really comment on whether it has or hasn't been remixed. It wasn't a concern for me personally.
The bonus features include a behind the sccenes documentary which includes interviews and a peak at the Am I Evil? rehearsal backstage which is just good fun. I like back stage stuff and interviews so I dig that extra feature.
So for the bulk features of this "product" I give it five stars, good picture, good sound, bonus features are nice added touch. I couldnt really find a reason to deduct any stars based on the product. The camera shots are typical concert fodder, close stage center, back stage left, over the crowd, close up floating over crowd and behind the band looks. I appreciate the traditional camera shots, I am not really a fan of the waving, roving camera techniques where you flashy, quick looks and can't follow anything. I like to get long shots of the guitar when there are solos etc. So , I was happy with the way this was shot.
Now for my personal opinions. I was very happy with the setlists for Megadeth and Metallica. Megadeth didn't waste time chatting, they went from song to song and really delivered. I've seen Megadeth live many times and they are always incredible, this is no exception, what really got me going for the Megadeth set was the guitar, those riffs are just so amazing, and Chris Broderick is an amazing addition to this lineup. His live performances with Nevermore were astounding and when he joined Megadeth I wondered if it would be enough for a guitarist of his caliber. Clearly it is, he is having a blast.
I was unhappy with Slayer's setlist. I have seen Slayer live and they are really worth seeing. Songs like World Painted Blood, Jihad, Hate Worldwide, Beauty Through Order would have been better replaced with Dead Skin Mask (I can't believe they didn't play this one), Expendable Youth, Die by the Sword. Too bad, but again, this is just my preference. I really recommend the double live CD Decade of Aggression. It's an amazing set of songs.Metallica setlist mirrors their previous blu-ray release. I think it's a solid set of songs and they sounded very good, the mix is great. This is when you see all the guys coming together and perform together and that is alot of fun. I've seen Metallica live every tour since 1986 and I can say this past tour has had some great setlists. I could have done without N.E.M., but hey the crowd loved it. If you have any questions I'll try to answer them.
((***Side ponder*** I wondered who decided what order the bands should perform in? I found it curious to have Megadeth perform before Slayer as they are more widely known.))
If you dig all four, or one or two of these bands, this is worth owning and was alot of fun to watch.

Records. 'The Big Four Live From Sofia' includes full shows from all four bands on a two-disc set as well as behind the scenes and interview footage. In addition to the two DVD set and the corresponding Blu-ray, there will be a limited edition 'Super Deluxe' Box Set including the 2 DVD set, five CD's with ALL 5 HOURS of music, a 24 page booklet, a two-sided poster, photos of each band, and a collectable Big 4 guitar pick.

Poor quality videos with interviews in the middle. Best songs are interrupted. Some bands are just not meant to be heard live. Overpriced. Don't buy it. Rent it first.

Masterful Mystery Tour Review

MASTER[piece]FUL MYSTERY TOUR is brilliant and in my mind a perfect album.
Oh the pure headbanging joy and humor it inflicts on the listener!
There are a few na-sayers stating that there are 'old' songs on the album and oh how lame that is- while I understand where they are 'sort of' coming from--- have they actually listened to this amazing album?
No, seems they haven't because the new incarnations of the 'older and re-recorded' songs are a million times better, not to distract or downplay from the original versions.
They're tweeks here and there in these versions of the 're-recorded' songs- faster tempo's, new lyrics, new riff's, amazing sound quality AND we haven't even talked yet about the NEW songs- look out, pure geniuses at work!
Take Running for Your Life, which was available for a long, long time on their myspace page as a live track- the one from MMT is completely different! When they started playing the MMT version live, some fans were like "i love this new song" and they would have to be reminded that actually this song has been in their live set for years, it is just in a different form and for my taste much, much improved and better.
Let me put it to ya this way- if you don't own a Beatallica CD and are curious and about getting one...
-- go buy this album and you will not be disappointed, in fact you will (99% fer sure) share your new found joy with others and spread the word of Beatallica. Perfect for in the car, at home, at a party, at work, etc.
