Earth Wind & Fire: In Concert (1981) Review

There are admittedly some flaws with this DVD- meaning it's not long enough, there is over dubbing (done well enough not really intrude unless you're looking for it) and some of their songs like September, Love's Holiday, and After the Love is Gone to name a few that aren't on this and could've made it longer. ALL THAT SAID: THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST, FUNNEST AND MOST ENJOYABLE 58 MINUTES YOU WILL EVER WATCH! I love this video. I saw it on "Visions" cable in Alaska back in 1982 back when HBO was the only pay channel and taped this off of that. I LOVE that this is available on DVD. They did a great job on cleaning up the analog recording. Someone else's review took exception to the video quality. I don't know if they wanted 3D or if they were just used to digital to digital. This started as an analog video and as such is limited by that- but the picture is fabulous to me (esepcially in comparison with the crappy copy I had on VHS.)
This DVD is hands down one of the best concerts I've ever watch on DVD- with all the energy, fun and honest love for music that the entire band displays it is contagious and so much fun to watch. The camera work is good- they do a great job of getting around to each member of the band - showing them having a good time and even "funning" around. The soprano sax solo by Andrew Woolfolk is smokin' and the "national anthem" of "That's the Way of the World" is so sincere and uplifting. Just a great concert!!!!!
This DVD would be worth it to me if it was $50 ( but luckily it's not.) I love this concert. It's full of great music and so much fun- and to quote Mr. Phillip Bailey, the "genius of Maurice White."

This briliant performance was recorded live at the Oakland Coliseum, December 30 and 31, 1981, with the sound, the hard-driving rhythms, the soothing melodies, the scintillating horns and special effects that have dazzled concertgoers around the world. Maurice White, the founder and driving force behind Earth, Wind & Fire has done it again: blending the energy, music and creativity that is Earth, Wind & Fire.

Leonard Maltin's review missed the main point of this movie. The movie is not primarily about a young musician who"struggles to gain acceptance for his own brand of ... rock music". Instead, the movie is about a man who has acquired his not only some of his father's musical interest and talent, but also his father's emotional instability and occasional abusiveness towards others, especially women. Maltin is correct that Prince's character is sexist and unappealing, but that's crucial to the movie. By playing his character as emotionally unstable, insensitive, and occasionally cruel, Prince de-glamourizes the cool, rebellious rock star image, showing that fame and talent are neither a guaranteed road to happiness nor a good excuse for being cruel to your girlfriend. This movie, rather than being a "soppy story" wrapped around concert footage, is instead genuinely literary. The concert footage is not an excuse for a movie; some of the concert footage is integral to the story. The title song, "Purple Rain", is used very effectively in the movie as a point of conflict between Prince and two of his female bandmates.
This movie, like Quadrophenia, would make a good subject for an English literature class targeted towards aimlessly rebellious under-achievers (rather than the 4.0 GPA high school students that most English literature classes are designed for).

It appears the DVD version of this spectacular concert is a bootleg manufactured in Brazil.
It does not appear to be official at all. Nothing stating any affiliation with Prince or Warner Bros. appears on the packaging aside from the name 'Prince.'
The quality of the packaging is poor with a photograph from the 'Purple Rain' era on the cover and no inserts at all.
'Extras' include 'fotos'(pictures of Prince mostly taken from 'sign...' or post name change. Pictures that are frequently seen. Nothing that you can't find in a quick online search.), 'biografia'(What appears to be a biography of Prince...in Spanish!), and 'discografia'(All the album covers through 'The Rainbow Children' and the release year of each album...I didn't take the time to check the accuracy.)..
After waiting months to receive this, I was extremely disappointed and I would recommend getting the VHS version if you are considering this.
It is a legendary performance that needs to be seen, but if you must have a DVD version, you could probably make one of your own from the VHS version that would surpass this one as far as quality goes.
