Armin Van Buuren: Armin Only - Imagine (2008) Review

The Ahoy 2007 DVD was by far one of the best trance home-productions ever made by any DJ or Electronic Recordhouse (even surpassing Tiësto's earlier works...which, in my opinion, have been superb). However, this 2-Disc set is absolutely perfect. It's just as good as what one expects from Armin's work, and may I dare say it's even better. The lights, the sound, the invited artists and Live performances, the production development...AMAZING.
The tracklist is available anywhere around the internet; a simple google search could get you the 31 tracks with title and artist name. Speaking of which, the selection is "The Works". You get a bit of the classic Armin [Shivers (although it's a new amazing remix by Alex M.O.R.P.H.), Rush Hour, Burned with Desire, Zocalo, and Sail...among some others] amazingly mixed and incorporated into Armin's new beats (Hold on to Me, Going Wrong, Imagine, etc...). Van Buuren also features some great new and complementary talent that goes perfectly along with the rest of his work. You'll be rocked by every face you've come to appreciate from Armin: Vocal-Trance, House-Trance, House, Progressive-House, Progressive-Trance...yeah, it's a perfect swirl of Trance and House.
The first disc is obviously the main presentation. Disc #2 is more of a Bonus CD. You get access to a very well prepared Behind the Scenes of Armin 2008, Music Videos, Deleted Scenes and Videos, and photos.
Armin fans, DJs, trance-heads, electronica genre admirers, or anyone who's just started building up their taste for delightful yet euphoric Electronic music, this is a MUST HAVE production. You'll have your headphones on for a while, as well as your stereo. Great play-on for a night or house party.
Long Live Armin.

Strange Behaviour Review

Since their beginnings, DD always lavished great care on their extended versions, working only with the best artists in the field and producing songs that, unlike the norm (especially today!) have their own consistence alongside the originals. DISC 1 The remixes in this disc are real classics: the longer timings and the splendid arrangements reveal the full melodic potential of the DD classics from the first half of the 80's. They're all masterpieces, real pop classics, but I would just like to mention the splendid "Planet Earth": this is the "night mix" which is actually different from the well-known "night version". And Nick Rhodes' tour de force in "Union of the Snake"! And the heavy, speaker-to-speaker drumming of "Wilder than the wild boys"! Ok, ok, I'll stop here, but I should add that those who, like me, already have some (or all) these songs in previous compilations should not hesitate, because the whole set has been superbly remastered at Abbey Road Studios, and the older recordings sound better than ever. DISC 2 Here there's something more to say, because these later remixes are much less well known, and were, for the most part, published only on maxi-vynil singles. They're uniformly great, but in my opinion the highlights are: "American science": I didn't know this "chemical reaction mix" and it's absolutely mesmerizing, a superclassy remix for one of DD's classiest songs. "I don't want your love" and "All she wants is" are both by Shep Pettibone, displaying the intricate, rich dance-sound typical of him, with some of the best electronic percussions ever heard. "Too much information" (jellybean benitez): this was already great , but jellybean makes it funky and clarifies the arrangement, to stunning effect. And also stunning, in a steamy, funky way, is the Nile Rodgers version of the unfairly underrated "Meet El Presidente". "Drowning man" was a surprise, because it's even better than the original: that was somewhat over-dense, but here the extended timing and D:ream's great arrangement really make this song ROCK! A final line: this anthology proves once again that these are really good songs, because they sound great in every arrangement imaginable AND after many years. (Planet Earth is 18 yrs-old!) I think that the best punishment for all the critics that poured s*** on DD in the 80's is just what happened: they're condemned to live in a world ruled by Boyzone and Britney Spears!

Magikal Journey (The Hits Collection) Review

Magikal Journey (The Hits Collection)

Tiesto's latest on Ultra Records is a collection of his past and present catalog of hits which by the way are all separate individual tracks, not beat mixed. The problem I had with this collection isn't with the songs themselves but the shortened time lengths on certain songs. Don't be fooled by Amazon's tracklist times of some of these songs, many are incorrect. What they have listed is the download version of "Magikal Journey" not the physical cd itself which is what I'm reviewing. For example On Disc One "Suburban Train" clocks in at 3:25, "Lethal Industry" at 2:44, "Just Be" at 3:12, - all edited versions. Onto Disc Two which highly edits "In The Dark" to 4:36, "Elements Of Life" (a live version radio edit no less) clocks in at 3:34, and "Carpe Nocturne" at 4:34! You'd think that considering the second disc which runs a tad over sixty three minutes, they'd have added longer versions, but again the customer gets shafted. In my opinion some of Tiesto's best songs have been chopped to pieces and some mediocre ones given their full length versions. And why a Tiesto 2010 remix of "In The Dark" at the end of the second disc? Quite frankly if this is the best Tiesto (or Ultra Records) could come up with as a collection of his past and present songs it's pretty pathetic.

Moloko is cool, and so they are on the stage as superb perfomances by Roisin Murphy and Mark Brydon demonstrated throughout the show.
This DVD showcases the band's powerful setup, recorded live in 2004 at The Brixton Academy on November 22, at their final tour show, which summarizes quite a long setlist including songs from all their previous albums out there by the date of the performance.
Energetic, eclectic, fun, exciting and complete. Most of the hits are included and you may expect good times in both fast and slow songs.
Recommended for electronic/house dj fans.

AIR: Eating, Sleeping, Waiting and Playing Review

AIR: Eating, Sleeping, Waiting and Playing

This is one quirky film. It had me puzzled at first but by the end I was laughing out loud. Yes, this is a documentary about Air's (The French band) first world tour with their album 'Moon Safari'. It contains playful interviews with the artist themselves, band members and average people on the street! The only complaint is that I just wished it contained more concert footage of the show itself. (But maybe that because I missed their tour.) All four music videos are included especially 'Kelly Watch the Stars' which sounds incredible! Overall, a fun documentary trying to capture and understand the insanity of touring.

The World Party on Tour Review

The World Party on Tour
Average Reviews:

The World Party has done an amazing job with this DVD.
I wasn't overly impressed with the depiction of the Pimp and Ho Ball in Vegas, mostly a bunch of drunk people in as little clothing as possible, but the second feature on Ibiza I found the best depiction to date.
I have been looking for a good depiction of Ibiza on video for years and these guys pulled it off. Everything from Bora Bora Beach, to Foam Parties, afterhours chill out sessions, to the sunset at Cafe del Mar is on this movie. It's a lot of beautiful people having a great time, and spans beyond the club scene showing off shopping and dining areas of the old Ibia Town as. The music is great, and the bonus cd is respectable. There are even two short interviews with Christopher Lawrence and Paul Van Dyk. It is informative, and flashy, and a great time. If it is a rainy night and there are no parties in your area, I recomend having a few drinks and turning up the volume on The World Party, you'll feel like you are in clubbers paradise yourself. TWP is right: This is "where the happiness is happening."

Tiesto: Elements of Life World Tour (2008) Review

Tiesto: Elements of Life World Tour (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've caught Tiesto 3 times now in 3 different parts of the world. For a guy generally called the "world's greatest dj," he has played in some of the most random places and still been able to bring not just fans but the half-fans, unifying them in his brand of uplifting trance. It's a rare gift that is in full display in this DVD. By straying from his own cuts, Tiesto energizes the crowd so well that you wish you were at this performance. To that extent, I call this DVD / CD package the party pack: not only does it come with a Compact Disc of 12 Tiesto tracks (at least mine does), the 2 DVD set is perfect for the late night house parties or more. At 16 : 9 Widescreen (perfect for most widescreen tvs and Dolby 5.1, the quality of the image and the sound is probably better than most Tiesto concerts you've been to! The extra features are pretty enjoyable as well, with the little mp3 soundtrack and a fun on the road snippet. I don't know too many people who could sit down to watch this DVD; most of them will be dancing and have a good time. Buy accordingly.
