Who We Touch Review

Who We Touch

A blistering guitar riff which soon morphs into a catchy retro Rock song on "Love is ending" opens the new CD by UK Rockers Charlatans. Comprising 10 tracks, other upbeat songs are the sixties-sounding harmonious "My foolish pride", "Sincerity" (with a shouty chorus), "Trust in desire" (which starts off an acoustic ballad) and the breezy "When I wonder".
"Your pure soul" is an acoustic/organ-drenched ballad. Other standouts are the Psychedelic Folky ballad "Oh!" and the part woozy experimental "You can swim" followed by the hidden spoken "On the threshold".
"Who we touch", truly touching.

What a journey it has been since the band's debut album Some Friendly (1990), and the breakthrough hit, 'The Only One I Know'...Formed a year earlier by Marlin Blunt, the Charlatans were instantly thrust into the limelight. It was a fresh and exciting time with a groundswell of music from the Manchester scene which gripped the UK and the world for years!Their eleventh studio album, and first to have a 'proper' North American release in almost a decade, Who We Touch ranks as the Charlatan's boldest to date, radically broadening their aesthetic. Produced by world-renowned bassist and studio wiz, Youth (McCartney, the Verve, more), Who We Touch is a 'soulful voyage', a journey through moods uplifting and profound, dark and delirious, which ultimately concludes in blissful optimism. The first emphasis track and video from Who We Touch, 'Love Is Ending' is a world class song while the rest of the album speaks of reconciliation ('Oh') with complex time signatures and continues into the ambience of 'You Can Swim' and then into the hidden track 'I Sing The Body Eclectic' featuring vocals by Crass' Penny Rimbauld! So, existentially, culturally, commercially, Who We Touch is a big record for The Charlatans. In places, you may hear echoes, or homages, reflecting music the band collectively hold dear The Stooges, The Byrds, the Madchester sound - but they are still unmistakably themselves, only remodelled, reimagined, re-energized.Now, after that journey through the past, the onward march continues ...

HAARP is the answer to the question of why Muse scoops just about every single "best live act" award that they are nominated for. We're talking about a band that has been able to master every single aspect of live entertainment on a career that has spanned over the past 10 years.
Being lucky enough to witness Muse on stage 6 times, I have to say that their performance never gets boring, and it's never short of fascinating. Matt Bellamy's voice, guitar riffs and distortions bring all that on-stage magic, backed of course by the stunning drum performance of Dom Howard, and the brilliant bass lines and backing vocals of Chris Wolstenholme.
Anyone who's been lucky enough to witness the Muse live experience knows that it's powerful, over the top, and enchanting.
In other words, Muse makes U2 look like Hannah Montana.
I truly wanted to give this DVD a 5 star review, but the only thing that stops me from doing so is the lack of extra features. Certain songs from the performance on the night of June 17th are missing, as well as songs from the 16th that weren't played on the 17th, including:
- Sing For Absolution
- Bliss
- City of Delusion
- Citizen Erased
- Sunburn
- Man of Mystery
- Microcuts
Let's just hope that we will be able to witness these performance, on a Blu-Ray release of HAARP.
Nevertheless HAARP could easily be considered among the best concert DVD releases ever.

Thunder Lightning Strike (Limited Tour Edition) Review

Thunder Lightning Strike (Limited Tour Edition)

The Go! Team might just have one of the catchiest albums of the year, "Thunder Lightning Strike." When it first came out, definitely the catchiest of last summer. Despite the current wave of nu-Manchester or new wave bands that are popping up, this Brighton band dips into a different musical well.

Their unique sound is made up of sunshine funk, big beats, peculiar samples, adrenaline-pumping rock, TV theme songs and the occasional cheerleader. (Yes, cheerleader) It opens with a charged trashcan drum song, "Panther Dash," before slipping into a series of funky, blippy grooves.

Those sounds run through the entire album, alternating between hyperkinetic rock'n'roll and colorful electronic big beats. It's all jammed with harmonica, horn, what sounds like a sitar, and hip-hop flourishes. And whatever style it is, it's danceable from beginning to end, densely packed with fun beats and wild rhythms.

In fact, it's hard to find a part of "Thunder Lightning Strike" that isn't packed with at least two kinds of sound at once. In fact, it sounds like they gathered every single instrument they could get their hands on, dosed them with Red Bull and planted them in front of a bunch of 1970s TV shows. That retro sound isn't a gimmick, however -- even if you don't have nostalgia for that TV era, the sound is wildly entertaining.

Their hyperdrivin' guitars might sound repetitive, if they didn't have lots of samples and extra instrumentation thrown in, including blaring trumpets and some explosive drums. And the flourishes range from glockenspiel to horns to harmonica. Without them, the music would seem a little too bare and ordinary.

And cheerleaders, of course -- there are some rousing cheerleader chants, exploding from the foot-stomping "Huddle Formation" and playfully chaotic "The Power Is On." It sounds like a football-game-turned-rave, with just the right amount of energetic messiness.

Imagine the Propellerheads on a sunny day, and you have the basic sound of the Go! Team. "Thunder Lightning Strike" -- perfect for a party or a wild night.

I was not the biggest fan of this band, but I do have a few of their records. Seeing that this was only an EP I picked it up on a lark, but was then surprised at my disappointed when it ended so abruptly.
While I had thought that The Ocean Blue were somewhat of a one trick pony (reverb, dated production, etc.) this release proves that the band has grown both as songwriters and as musicians. Like their past releases, each track here offers tangible atmosphere -But for Waterworks, add to that an updated sense of song structure and melody.
This could easily be a five star record had it been just 4 or 5 tracks longer. Still, if this is just a taste of what is to come, I'm back on board.

The Ocean Blue cemented their place as one of the most influential bands of the New Wave with a sound rooted in the same vein as The Smiths and New Order. On this album, the group has soaked up the sounds of Stereolab and The Sea And The Cake to further develop their new wave sound.--This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

Conditions is something that the indie music lover dreams to discover- A creative record handmade by a humble band from Australia with incredibly talented members and unbelievable songwriting abilities. Great singles like "Sweet Disposition," "Fader," and "Love Lost" are obvious places to start; but even beyond these, The Temper Trap packs a punch. The haunting "Soldier On" could easily be one of the best alternative tracks this decade, and the energetic "Science of Fear" is an instantly catchy and contagiously original anthem for the ages.
This fantastic band lives up to every expectation that can be drawn from "Sweet Disposition." Don't even begin to hesitate purchasing this record- Your money will be unquestionably well-spent.

Reunion Tour Review

Reunion Tour

The Canadian indie outfit The Weakerthans has released just four albums in the 10 years of their existence, which has been just enough to barely keep their heads above the waters of obscurity. Nevertheless, the songwriting prowess of frontman John K Samson is such that the band maintains a modestly healthy fanbase; the two shows I've attended have been tiny venues (200-300 seaters), but both have sold out. The Weakerthans even surface occasionally in the pop mainstream (their song "Aside" was the end-credits track in the 2005 comedy "The Wedding Crashers"). All of the band's members have various arts-related day jobs, and this down-to-earth aesthetic is embodied in their music.
The best and the worst thing about "Reunion Tour", which was 4 years in the making, is that it has an insurmountable air of familiarity. As a fan with only marginal interest in The Weakerthans, I found myself confusing the new songs for the old songs at a recent show. Samson is a singularly impressive songwriter, and his command of language in particular makes some of his indie peers look like simpletons. The opening track, "Civil Twilight", is an eloquent fiction narrated by an imaginary, lovelorn bus driver, and the manner in which Samson tosses off the song's first lines is nothing short of masterful: "My confusion-cornered commuters are cursing the cold away / As December tries to dissemble the length of their working day / And they bite their mitts off to show me transfers, deposit change / And I can't stop finding your face in their faces, all rearranged." But Samson seems to be stuck in a melodic rut, repeating many of the same musical patterns over and over again, both here and on previous albums. This is sort of the musical equivalent of a horror writer working an axe-murderer into every book; there's a lot you can do with an axe-murderer, but after a while the reader begins to crave some variety on a more fundamental level.
Though "Reunion Tour" offers a more diverse sonic pallette than previous outings, its a fairly superficial change (it's as if this time, the axe-murderer is a transvestite). Lyrically, Samson has moved beyond the personal, sometimes solipsistic narrative style that plagues many indie songwriters, embracing instead a variety of disparate viewpoints, many of which seem to have spurred his imagination to new poetic heights. But, musically speaking, "Reunion Tour" is firmly in the mold of 2003's "Reconstruction Site", with the songs on the new album offering no structural improvements or innovations over their 4-year-old counterparts.
The one notable exception is the exquisitely textured "Night Windows", which offers a glimpse of what this new album might have sounded like if the Weakerthans had indeed achieved a full-blown artistic breakthrough. Though Samson's vocal line is still basically melodically stagnant, this fact is offset by the other musical elements in play, and by the achingly wistful lyrics. The intricate bass line, tightly entwined with the drummer's rim-shots, gives way to Samson's obliquely melancholic lyrics: "I see you suddenly alive, and nearly smiling...". The exact inspiration for the song is still a mystery to me, though the piece is apparently a hopeless ode to a lost love one, expressing the narrator's frustration at being unable now to say all the things he should have said when he had the chance. The instrumentation consists of several distinct aural elements: that walking bass line, those taut drums, the minimalistic reiterations of a single guitar chord. The song builds organically to a quietly heartbreaking climax when the other band members, singing backup in 4-part harmony, enter with the lyrics: "But you're not / Coming home again / And I won't / Ever get to say..." The addition of this musical layer brings the song to a new level; those voices, awkwardly sincere in an almost adolescent way, are immediately endearing, and over those repeated lines, Samson sings the things that he won't ever get to say.

The Weakerthans are from Canada and feature an ex member of Propaghandi and current member of Broken Social Scene. With music that channels the spirit of punk, alt-country, rock and folk, the band look set to build on the intense critical acclaim that greeted their last album Reconstruction Site.
