You can see my reviews of 3 other Nick Brignola recordings to see that I consider Nick to be the best baritone sax player that ever was.Live at Sweet Basil-First Set and Things Ain't What They Used to Be: Last Set at Sweet Basil and Like Old Times. My review of this recording is no different. 5 stars to Nick for this recording, which I believe is his last. He recorded it in 2000, two years before his death at age 65 in 2002.
Some of his other recordings that I treasure, "On a Different Level" and "Flight of the Eagle" I feel I don't have to review because other reviewers agree with me and gave those recordings 5 stars. So I hope you are impressed enough to give them all a hearing.
This recording features musicians Nick worked with alot: , marvelous guitarist Chuck D'Aloia; star bassist Eddie Gomez; and drummer Bill Stewart. Percussionist Cafe was added on 3 numbers.
Nick never rested on his laurels. He played hard bop with the best, but did add more modern sounding numbers to his recordings. You get a mix of standards and new compositions. You will enjoy this. Farewell Nick, and thank you for the treasures you left us.
